As a retired engineer I have had a passion for landscape photography and the technology behind the equipment for more than 40 years. This passion has been ignited recently with my retirement, with the luxury of time to concentrate on photography coupled with travel. As a past member of the HCP (Houston Centre of Photography) in Houston Texas, I was able to explore the potential of digital photography through the many courses that this organisation offers. However, my first course in darkroom photography goes back to the mid 1980's at the Dobell Centre in Paddington, Sydney. This is where I first discovered the many possibilities of black and white photography and printing, landscape photography and darkroom techniques. This was a grounding that I think helped me understand the "mechanics" of photography. Even though there are many purists that dispell the digital photographic age, my view is that is has been one of the most significant developments in photography and allows access for all levels of enthusiasts at relatively low cost and less impact to the environment. Photography still comes down to composition and this creative aspect of the art will never be challenged by the ditigal age. Happy photography.
