50mm Prime Compositions

May 2017

This image deserves special commendation. I love the subject, the colours, composition, the bokeh. It's a beautifully shot 50mm image. The only reason it didn't get into the top 10 was that it just didn't have that extra out of the box, different compositions that I was looking for in this contest. Amazing regardless!

Simply put, I love this image. The stoic highland bull in profile is captured with perfect light. The shallow depth of field contrasts the bull nicely with its surroundings, yet the beautiful landscape detail is not lost - it turns into a lovely out of focus accent to the subject. Beautiful use of a 50mm lens and the rule of thirds!

The composition of this image captures the spirit of this contest so perfectly. The tight focus on the piano keys with the subtly focus shifted to the reflection of the piano music is perfect. I struggled to add this photo to the top 10 of mine because of the high level of grain present in the shot. Some post processing to decrease the noise, in my opinion would give this shot the extra edge it needs to be absolutely stunning. Well done!

This is one of my favourite images in this contest and was hard pressed to challenge for 1st place. I love the abstract architectural detail of this shot. Even after a long time staring at this image I still can't quite tell exactly what I'm looking at, which is what makes is so compelling. Unlike other B&W architectural captures this one is unique and goes outside the box, making use of the 50mm lens perfectly; capturing the spirit of this contest.

Ranking images in this contest proved a daunting task. This image is one of the reasons. The composition of this image is complex and moving, and yet so simple at the same time. The connection between the person and their dog is evident. The combination of the beautiful winter scenery over the misty lake as a backdrop, with the spire silhouette, frost on the dock and long shadows just top it off. The tight angle afforded by the 50mm prime lens gives this image so much character, much more so than would have been afforded by a wide angle lens. Incredibly well shot.

I don't know what it is about this image, but it just catches my eye. The simplicity, lighting, and composition are perfect. The tight angle chosen for the subject is compelling. The image has an almost gritty quality, but is sharp and all the details are clear at the same time. A very hard image to rank indeed. Well done.

Prime lenses challenge your creativity because you've only got a fixed focal length to make the shot. This limitation can produce amazing images using unusual angles and different compositions than would otherwise be chosen with a zoom lens. The 50mm prime is the most ubiquitous of these lenses, so I want to see photos of anything taken with a 50mm prime lens. Be creative in your subject and composition, and create something uniquely amazing.
