Abandoned and Neglected Buildings

May 2022

I really like how the photographer included their silhouette in this image. It adds a human element to an otherwise desolate scene and acknowledges photographers' influence on what lies in front of the lens, which is something that often gets ignored. Well done!

What an intriguing image! When I first saw it, I thought the photo had been distorted, but then I realized that the building is in fact that severely slanted. It's fascinating that a building leaning so much is still standing. Nice color palette, too.

This photo made me smile. What a clever way to liven up an abandoned building and make it more inviting! Neglect creates a new canvas. I also like how there are two doorways at the bottom of the frame. These make me curious about what lies inside. Nicely done!

Really nice framing and layering in this photo. Having the rusted out car in the foreground helps create context for the buildings behind it and amplifies the sense of abandonment. I also appreciate how the cool blue of the sky complements the warm tones of the land, buildings, and car.

Very nice use of perspective in this photograph. It's such a different view of an abandoned building than I am used to seeing. I also like all of the openings in the brick siding; they create a nice pattern and really pull the eye through the frame. Great job!

This is an eerily beautiful image and reminds me a bit of one of Gregory Crewdson's film stills. The multiple light sources create a sense of mystery, and the presence of both stars and what looks like the sun is disconcerting. Well done!

This is such a poetic image. The tree stumps suggest death and decay and imply that the house in the background will meet a similar fate. I also like the subdued color palette and foggy skies; they reinforce the somber mood of the photo.

I really like the simple elegance of this image: the block-like home, the rippled sand, the wispy clouds, the complementary warm and cool hues. It's eerie to see nature swallowing a house like this, but I also find it visually poetic. Great photograph!

This is fascinating! It's unsettling but also beautiful to see sand swallow a house like this. It reminds me a bit of quicksand. There were several similar images submitted, but I particularly like the layers of this one, and how we can see through multiple rooms and doorways. Great job!

You can really feel the emptiness and desertion in this image. I love how the photographer uses the leading lines and a low horizon to amplify this feeling. I also like the color palette and overall vastness of the frame. Great job!

I appreciate the humor and visual symmetry of this photograph. Each chair corresponds with a hole in the wall. I also enjoy looking at the the textures of the walls and floor, and I appreciate the slightly subdued color palette. Great job!

I really enjoy the color and framing of this image, and how they are used to illustrate nature gradually reclaiming a manmade space. The vibrant green in the center catches my eye, and then I see how color is spreading to the surrounding stones. Great job!

I really appreciate the texture and geometry of this photograph. The shallow depth of field also adds something, making objects in the background less distinct and more intriguing. For example, the bits of rebar almost appear like sticks of incense, or maybe hair. Great job turning a scene of abandonment into something so layered!

Wonderful framing and moment! I really enjoy the overlap of nature and architecture in this image and noticing how the two start to merge. Nature is in the process of reclaiming this structure, and the bird helps emphasize that, as do the cows in the distance. I also appreciate the photo's color palette.

Abandoned and neglected buildings can have incredibly character and interest to them, and the urbex (urban exploration) movement has emerged in the past few years and made the discovery and exploration of abandoned and hidden manmade structures even more popular. There can be issues of trespass and safety that must be addressed, as abandoned buildings are often not open to the public, and can be in states of disrepair. Where one can be accessed safely and legally, there is an excitement in shooting a building or space that many might not be aware of.
