Abstract Plants and Flowers

February 2023

This has to be my favourite close up of a leaf I've seen in this competition. The way the light picks out all the veins it looks like an arial photograph. This play on scale draws me in and invites me to explore all the interconnecting lines imagining an intricate cityscape viewed from far above. i think the feeling you get when looking at this really embodies what the theme of this competition is all about. A lovely image, well done.

Such a beautiful image. I think it's the perfect combination of subject and lighting. The wonderful tassels on the tulip make feel really otherworldly. Having the black background removes context and adds to the surreal feeling. And of course the colour adds this awesome ominous element I think. Like the could be bloody teeth. Or perhaps some strange sea creature. It's the possibilities with this one that make me love it so much. And technically it's perfect I think, from the choice of composition to the lighting. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Plants and flowers make wonderful and rewarding subjects for abstract photography. It usually, but not always, relies on getting closer to the subject and removing surrounding distractions. Shot on a still day, their inanimate nature means that time can be spent exploring different angles, distances and compositions. Some images will be recognisable, others will leave the viewer disengaged from the subject, and focussed more on the colours, forms and textures. All plants, including trees, are fine for submission.

I just love the way you've caputred the light coming through the leaves in this image. The angle of the light and shape of the leaves making the scene look like a mountain range. My one small suggestion would be to edit out the tiny hole as it does distract the eye. I'd also consider cropping slightly to remove the stems top left and bottom right to make it even more abstract and remove more context. These are just tiny tweaks to thing about and It's still a lovely image regardless. Congratulations.
