Atmospheric Portraiture

January 2023

Quite a simple portrait on first glance but the more you look the more interesting the story is. Lovely natural soft lighting on the woman as she enjoys her morning cigarette with a cup of coffee watching out of the window as the city wakes up.

A very atmospheric portrait. Lovely natural lighting. An intense stare and just enough detail in the background to add interest as the viewer of the image looks first at his eyes, then to his reflection then out of the window and back around to his hand. With a slight repositioning of the subject in the frame (is there anything more to the right of the frame in the original shot?) you would have the Fibonacci spiral. A lovely portrait and I am glad it means so much to you both.

Love the lighting. Love his connection with the camera. Love all the different things that are going on in the image that kept my interest. Really well done. Maybe a little over processed around the bags at the bottom of the image for my personal taste but the highlights really show the texture of the various objects around the room. With the aperture at only f2.8 everything seems in focus which makes me assume you have probably focus stacked the image? Well done removing the light from the end of the mantle piece.

A lovely looking character. She looks as interested in you and your camera as you are in her which really brings the portrait to life. Lovely lighting and an interesting amount of detail in the surrounding fabrics add interest without distracting. Well done for spotting her below the table!

A really powerful portrait. Such character. The atmosphere is created both by the powerful, yet simple pose. The intense expression and connection directly with the viewer really grabbed my attention. It would have been nice to see just a little detail in the background but I like how his jumper isn't perfect and you haven't cleaned up the flecks and hairs. A lovely portrait, well done.

I love that the reflection is looking at itself and not at the camera. The bleak looking concrete wall with a minimalist mirror adds to the atmosphere. I personally would have liked to see a bit more of the surroundings as I think this could have added even more interest to the frame. Great lighting and concept. Well done

Lovely atmosphere in this image which is created by the lamp she is holding. It's a shame she wasn't looking at the camera but I really enjoyed how nearly the whole frame is filled with lights yet it is just a single bulb that lights the girls face.

Such emotion and feeling in this portrait. The viewer can't help but look at this portrait again and again. We have all had days of despair and the multiple exposure really adds to the atmosphere and feeling. My only suggestion would be that the single eye is a little too sharp compared to the rest of portrait. Overall a really interesting portrait - well done

I love the blast of sunlight coming in from the corner of the frame. It really grabs the viewers attention. The boys gentle expression as he reads from his book whilst trapped behind a window during lockdown. A lovely reminder of that unique time.
