Hi!

I wanted to thank you for entering the Aurora contest! When I judged this, I was looking first for just component photography- level camera, good exposure, no overexposure, etc. You made it past that level!

But then the next level was something different and new. Something that was more than JUST the aurora. Something with an interesting BG, Foreground, or cool colors- something that stood out. Again, you made that list!

Then came the HARD part- cutting THAT list down to ten! And that was hard! I tried to pick not just the best technical, but images that showed something new and different.

So thanks again for entering, let me know if you have any SPECIFIC questions!

This is one of two views of this shot.... and I do NOT like that I chose two.... but both are so good!

Your composition is so good. The balance is beautidul. Your windows are NOT blown out, and provide great warmth.

And the ocean! Wow!

Great job here!

This would be a GREAT picture in daylight- doing at night just pops it out of the park!

Good color correction and your contrast is awesome.

What I really liked about this is that it is SO ORIGINAL, no other image was anything close to this.

Good Job!

Again, a simple composition that works well. I am guessing the moon was up, it sure is bright!

I like the leading lines and the weight of this image. A very pretty all around piece!

Thank you for entering!

Dave

This image is a lot of fun! I love the foreground, and how the shapes reflect from top to bottom.

Your composite is spot on too.... really well done! You did not burn out the highlights, and you still got tyhe shadows- yes, I realize its two images, but still, you know what you are doing.

Love this piece!

Dave

I really like the composite, and the balance of the piece. The totally empty foreground is so very risky, and works so well. Exposure is spot on and focus is massively sharp.

Great image, I really like it a lot.

The glow in this is what appealed to me. The purples and teal look so good, too.

I love contradictions in images, too- you are shooting something up high, and you shoot low- great on you for that! Makes a new and refreshing piece!

Dave

Meet the expert judge

This is the second of two images of this village I picked as winners. I HATE that I picked two images with the same subject, but you both did it two different ways, and both worked. The both are so crisp, I just love them!

Dave

Brief

The aurora (also known as the northern and southern lights) are a natural light display predominantly seen in high-latitude regions. The effects that are produced by the disturbance of solar wind in polar regions are some of the most beautiful phenomena the earth has to offer. This subject creates images that are stunning with almost no effort, but understanding your camera and light sensitivity will make the results particularly successful.

Again, it's the light here that makes this. I assume the moon through clouds?

Your treatment of this is what makes it outstanding- you did NOT crank the vibrance and the saturation, and you held back clarify- it works well. Natural and moody! Just love it!
