This is a tricky shot and from what I can tell you nailed it. There doesn't seem to be anything blown out even among this explosive white. The interaction between these two birds and the limited color palette are incredibly strong and draw you right into the piece., all made more magic by the kicked up snow dancing around the scene. This is one of the best examples I've seen of making the environment an absolute part of your composition.
This shot is a master craft in light and composition. The diagonal flow of the puffins, partially hidden by the foreground interest, and that soft blur in the back. The overall light and airy feel and the expressions that look like two birds in love. The whole image just feels like tenderness and care.
I admit of all the photos I thought I would see judging this contest, one like this was not in my mind. This is such a stunning composition made powerful by the clarity and color of that eye staring right at you, its catchlight making it come alive. The soft greens and bokeh fading to darkness on the other side keep this whole thing tight and focused right on the subject who is just peeking precariously around the corner. Awesome moment and there is just so much feeling that can be interpreted here.
This is such a lovely shot and the wider focus plane here tells such a compelling story, almost as if one bird is yelling at the other, trying to slow down the one nesting with important information. Could be anything, but looking at this image makes me think of all the possibilities and thats one of the things that makes a great image.

For this contest I want to see your photos of birds in action, whether courtship, hunting, feeding, fighting, playing, or simply being themselves in a way that tells a story. Capture birds in those moments that make the viewer feel something, whether it is the intensity of a bird of prey or the tenderness of a songbird at rest. Birds are endlessly fascinating and their behaviour can spark powerful emotions in us, from awe and admiration to joy, tension or even fear, so I am looking forward to seeing your photos.
