The central composition enhances the appearance of the hawk owl flying straight towards the viewer. The precise focus on the owl's facial disc and outstretched wings contrasts well with the out of focus background. The shallow depth of field isolates the subject, while the falling snow creates a beautiful background bokeh effect. The fast shutter speed used ensures the wing tips are completely frozen.
A striking and well executed photograph. Our eyes are immediately drawn to the powerful osprey and the wriggling trout in its sharp talons. The sharp focus on the bird and fish contrasts well with the defocused background and the bokeh provided by the water droplets, . The tight framing ensures plenty of detail and dramatic action showing excellent timing and composition. Using an aperture of f/4 instead of f/2.8 the focus would have been sharper on eyes and beak of the osprey.
An immediately striking portrait! Beak wide open, and piercing eyes locked directly on the camera we really get a sense of the eagles ferocity. The sharp focus emphasizes the intricate feather detail and texture of the beak. Excellent lighting accentuates the contrast between the dark plumage and white head, while the shallow depth of field isolates the subject, creating an intense, commanding image.
This well executed habitat image presents a bald eagle perched high in the treetops surveying their kingdom. The photograph demonstrates exceptional sharpness and fine detail, despite the eagle being small in the frame. The long focal length compresses the image, creating minimal distortion and enhancing the layered mountainous backdrop. The dynamic range is well-managed, preserving detail in both shadows and highlights, while edge sharpness isolates the eagle crisply from the subdued background. The composition's vertical alignment leads the eye naturally from the tree to the subject, reinforcing the eagle’s dominant, watchful pose.
Precise focus and good use of shutter speed freezes the moment perfectly and ensures good detail. Slight heat distortion in the background hints at the soaring temperatures, adding environmental context. Excellent color balance emphasizes the natural tones of the kite’s plumage and the surrounding arid environment.

There’s something particularly fascinating about birds of prey. They are rarer finds than many common species, and have a certain majesty and power about them. Their particular skill is often to be able to hover in mid-air, or soar on the wind, looking for prey, but then to dive at speed and take their next live meal. Our definition for this contest is taken from the ‘Bird of prey’ wikipedia page (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_of_prey" target="_blank">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_of_prey</a>) and includes species that primarily hunt and feed on vertebrates, including owls.

An interesting image that highlights the fine balance between life and death in the animal world. The sharp focus on the eagle and what looks like a deer carcass contrasts well with the the soft defocused background. A well balanced exposure prevents overexposure of the snow while retaining detail in the eagle's dark plumage.
Good use of shutter speed ensures the action is frozen at just the right moment. The composition utilises the owl's extended wings as visual guides, and the diagonal positioning of the owl’s body creates dynamic tension, anchoring the viewer's focus on the action. Accurate white balance preserves the natural hues of the barn owl's plumage and background.
Slightly less aggressive noise reduction on the barn owl would have provided greater feather detail while keeping the background clean.
An interesting and unusual image of an incredibly rare subject! Abstract images such as these are very hard to execute, but here there is great sharpness on the kites eye and beak that contrasts well with the intentional motion blur in the bird’s wings and body. The lack of sharpness emphasizes fluidity and movement, while the pale plumage of the leucistic kite contrasts softly with the background. The slow shutter used creates sweeping, ethereal lines, with the kite’s form almost dissolving into its environment.
