Black and white portraits

My choice for the number one ranking. Lovely tones, contrasts and a wonderful context. This photograph whether contrived or a real life setting conveys emotion and feeling. A young boy working in a dry dock or boatyard, partially in shadow, creates an atmospheric moment. A superb shot and beautifully edited to compliment the clearly arduous life he faces on a daily basis.

A beautiful young women captured in wonderful light against a textured wall. I love the expression, tones and editing. A photo which truly deserved being in the top ten. The photo conveys a connection with the subject and an emotion which I think is integral in a good portrait. In this I can see the humanity of the moment.

A very young baby in all its innocence portrayed beautifully in this shot. The child, asleep against a dark background sets off the image to perfection. The editing is superb with great tones and contrasts. A wonderful capture with real feeling portrayed in the photograph. This isn’t an easy shot to take, hence, all credit due to the photographer.

A sharp, clear image with conveyance of an emotive moment. I love the editing and the tones. This image is powerful in black and white and the photographer has captured it beautifully. Sometimes it is good to go in close and fill the frame and in this case doing just that has worked well. Well done.

A strong character and a great subject to photograph. There is a feeling of emotion and connection. The image, I think, would have been better against a different background (darker and more homogenous) and perhaps needs a little more tonal contrast to make it stand out. Nonetheless the photograph captures the eye and is deserving of positive appraisal.
