Blue and Yellow

April 2022

You have captured a moment so beautifully. Your image is so peaceful even though it is full of contrast. The clash between the yellow and blue, the division of the bright light on her face and the dark shadows is bold. But the overall feeling is one of such lovely serenity. Her expression and gentle touch of the flower. The softness created with a shallow depth of field. These produce a restfullness. I like that you've composed the image so there are out of focus flowers against the shadow on the side of her face to break up that large dark area.

There were many entries showing the flag and this one was my favourite. The combination of the unfurled flag and the statue's outstretched arms madae the phrase "Slava Ukraini!" pop into to my head before I'd even read the image caption. Great capture. Congratulations on making the top 10!

Congratulations on making the top 10! I was at the Monkey Temple (Swayambhu) in Kathmandu just last month and was blown away by the place (almost zero tourists so very authentic locals-only vibe). It's a lovely pic simple but effective!

As a thumbnail this is a really striking image and fits the brief perfectly.

The slight gradient of the waters blue draws the viewers eye down through the image.

I would maybe like to see a 5x4 crop of it and I'm not sure if the shadow adds anything to the shot but it is a great image.

Well done!

Big congratulations from all of us on winning second place! The sharpness and depth of colour in this image are incredible. It really captures the vibrancy and cultural authenticity of Indian religious festivals. This one jumped out at me from among a sea of other entries – it's such a great entry for this Blue and Yellow theme. Thank you for participating in this contest for such a worthy cause!

I love the clean clear lines and strong blocks of color in this photo. Your use of them in composing your photo produces an image with great strength and its symmetry is most satisfying to look at. The colors for this competition theme are just right.

I like the simplicity of this photo. The blue and yellow are perfect for the theme of this competition and you have included them so well in your composition. I like the contrast with the dark shadow on the building and the dark fine jagged lines of the tree in the bottom corner.

This is a lovely portrait of the girls. I like that only one is looking directly at your camera as the gaze of the girl in pink tends to lead the eye around to look at more of the composition. The light is lovely and the colors work well together. I have to wonder what she has in her handbag that she's holding so carefully.

Congratulations on winning first place! All five of us judges thought that this shot was absolutely amazing. The deep contrast and shadows really work here. Eyes are drawn immediately to the lead camel and the shadows but then the sand, almost appearing to vibrate towards the left of the frame, draws them outwards and away, inviting the viewer to imagine the journey across a vast expanse that awaits. And of course, you've nailed the blue and yellow contest brief. Thank you for participating in this contest for such a worthy cause.

Meet the expert judge

I love the expression on the faces of the two girls. It looks like you were having some fun organizing this photo. Your use of colors and movement, and lack of it in the girl that is sitting, is interesting. The flowing movement in the girl's yellow dress adds an interesting dynamic to your photograph.

Such a beautiful image – the butterfly and the lady's gentle expression combine to create a bit of a Snow White moment. I put this one directly in the top 10 bucket when I saw it :) Congratulations on 6th place!
