Well done to our third place photographer who has captured this fleeting moment and great candid portrait. The use of colour in this instance works well as the warmer tones in the child’s face stand out and contrast against the dark material of the surrounding women’s clothing. The photographer has created a strong composition and has used the negative dark space effectively to create a strong portrait. They have also made excellent use of the natural light, which is warm and soft in tone.
Congratulations to our first place winner who has captured this beautiful and symbolic portrait of a young child. The photographer has created a strong composition and the delicate black and white finish emphasises the child’s fragility and innocence. The child is completely engrossed in their own thoughts and appears to have a look of intrigue on their face as well as being slightly daunted (in the reflection) by the passing world. The photographer has created space around the child, which gives the impression that they are starting their journey towards independence yet the window their face is pressed against reminds us that they are still protected from the complexities of the world. Great work!

Taking a portrait on the sly may seem daunting, however the end result can be worth it. Whether you’re capturing strangers on the street or family and friends at home, share your candid portraits to be in with a chance of winning a rucksack. A candid portrait can be achieved in many ways: for example when a person is on the move, or surprising the subject.
In second place this candid street image caught our attention for all the right reasons! We love how it plays with the subject’s expression, and the arrow sign on the wall. The fact that the subject is walking in the other direction with a look of defiance in his eyes gives the impression of going against the system and making your own decision. The photographer has captured all these elements in a great composition and has also completed the black and white conversion to a high standard.
