Car Trails at Night

February 2022

I love the maximal feeling of this photograph - "more is more"! The car trail lights and stars adding an intensity of colour to this composition. The lights look unreal, almost like fireworks, the colours are so bright and sci-fi, fantastic!

This is a photograph of an extraordinary road, which captures some of the 72 mountain turns! The exposure is dark but this works well, accentuating the car lights and reducing the context. The car lights look like trails of lava and the long exposure also shows the stars movement, a wonderful and evocative image.

I assume this photograph was made with a drone.. . the photographer doesn't reveal precisely how it was made, but its wonderful. Its almost scaleless too, it could be a close up from a science lab? The intensity of the colours adding to this sci-fi feeling. A wonderfully engaging image!

This is a great example of a photograph that is both a highly accomplished technically and also well thought out conceptually. The bridge works well as an 'anchor' for the composition, with the trail lights and stars arching out from the centre of the image.

This is a great response to the competion brief, particularly as the photographer has chosen to concentrate just on the light trails and reduce any extra context. I love how the image looks almost b&w on the right side, wonderfully restrained and elegant!

The minimal nature of this photograph is perfectly composed. I love the way the trail lights dissect diagonally accross the frame, dividing the picture in half. The colour palette is also wonderful, the green of the Northern Lights balances well with the warmth of the trail lights.

As much as I love the curves of the trail lights in this photograph, the part that captured my attention was the colour of the trees on the right side of the frame. I love the way they add to the shape of the composition, framing and guiding the viewer back to the centre of the frame. The starry sky also works well as a visual foil to the car lights.

The is one of the most minimal of all the competion entries, its even titled 'untitled'! But I love this about it. The red lights hang in the blackness of the right side of the frame, suspended and accentuating the visual blankness, its a weirdly sophisticated composition.

This is a simple but elegant photograph that sucessfully answers the competition brief in a more original way. I love the reduced minimal nature of the lights within this photograph. The colour palette is also successful, the muted tones adding to the calm and restful nature of the image, great!

I love the colours of the trail lights in this photograph, particularly the way they fill the entirety of the road. The photographer has also chosen a magical time of day to shoot, twilight, or the Violet Hour (as TS Elliot called it) perfectly balances the warmth of the car lights.

Another spooky, foggy, night time shot and again accentuating the minimal. This photograph is a wonderful depiction of a nightime urban landscape, where you can almost hear the wind whistling. The simple red lights add to the almost distopian feeling.

I'm not always a fan of heavily Photoshop'ed images, but I love this one. The photographers choice to layer multiple images together makes for an almost sci-fi feeling to the image. The one point perspective of the lights works perfectly, adding to the feeling of speed and acceleration.

Meet the expert judge

Most of the photographs in this competition had some degree of focus, to accent against the trail lights, I love that this image is completely blurry. This works well to emphasise the feeling of speed and acceleration of the photograph.

This is simply a beautiful image. I love the amount of ambient light that the car lights provide to illuminate the landscape. The mountains have just enough light on them to create an atmosphere. I also love the pools of blue light throughout the depth of the photograph, creating a visual balance to the overall dark feeling. Wonderful.

I was slightly dissapointed that this photograph is out of focus, but it doesn't distract from the wonderful feeling that it conveys. I love that the photo feels like a b&w image, including the stars in the sky, and the only colour is from the trail lights.

Heading out into the night to shoot photography has a particular thrill to it. It takes effort, but feels adventurous, and you’re creating a night to remember. Shooting the moving headlights and taillights of cars, using longer shutter speeds to create trails, is a brilliant way to sculpt imagery using available light sources. And you don’t need to live next to a busy road. A solitary pair of red lights snaking their way across a rolling moonlit countryside can be incredibly evocative.
