Character Study - Young DCPOTY

This image is all about the personalities of the girls and the hands play an important role in expressing an intimacy in their relationship although the mood is sombre. The red tint of the post production style gives the image a timeless feel that makes it hard to place in time. Although both girls are within the frame the use of depth of field puts the focus on the girl with the freckles - as does the title of the image.

This portrait poses more questions than it answers and you are definitely left intrigued as to the story behind the image. Although the lighting is simplistic the composition has strong balance and I like the pop of red on her lips to match the rope. I want to know more.

It is the expression of the sitter that makes this about her as well as the make up. The extreme contrast of white and green/black means the viewers attention is drawn to her eyes and then you are met with a very forceful and direct eye contact which is quite disconcerting – but in a good way! I like the use of the reflector to soften the shadows – it means the lighting is not a distraction in any way.
