Collections of Things

February 2024

Filling the frame with a mix of colourful Pokemon characters is a great idea, but there are a few technical issues with this shot. Firstly, the focus is slightly off, which lessens the overall impact. Secondly, the white balance needs tweaking, probably due to artificial lighting in the hall. Finally, there is a bit of noise, which adds to the impression of softness (the ISO was 3200). Using a tripod might have helped, but I appreciate that when you're at a busy event this is sometimes not possible!

The lighting, the decision to convert to black & white, the effort made to fill gaps between the cameras with small, relevant bits of kit – there’s a lot to love about this picture.

Shooting from above was a great idea, and cropping some of the equipment at the edges of the frame gives the impression that we are seeing part of a much larger collection. Great job!

This is a wonderful example of minimalism. While it might look like a study in white, the shadows help to emphasis the shapes of the tea set, plus the streak of grey in the marble adds detail. The photographer has positioned everything perfectly, layering up objects to create different heights.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** Some collections are made, and we do love collecting things. From pebbles on memorable beach walks to guitars played by rock legends, and not forgetting stamps, coins, pill boxes and a thousand other beautiful, interesting and sometimes bizarre things. Other collections are found on our travels - cars at a vintage rally, lamps for sale at a Turkish bazaar, or a flock of gulls on a roof.
