This image is the perfect example of successful colour toning: graceful and impactful. Paired with a compelling moody vibe, beautiful detail and incredible depth, I simply couldn't not award this image the first place in the competition. The trees are lit just enough so that some of the leaves are highlighted, adding beautiful crisp detail that stands out against the milky morning fog. The colour grading is just right - colourful enough to catch the viewer's creative eye, yet tasteful, adding interest and mood to the image rather than diverting the viewer's attention. What a great image - fantastic job!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s <a href="https://www.photocrowd.com/photographer-community/">Leaderboard</a>.** The toning of photographic prints was a commonplace practise that lent a different colour to the print, usually either a brown/sepia or blue tone. It was also thought in most cases to improve the archival quality of the print. It worked by replacing the metallic silver in the print’s emulsion with a different silver compound, such as silver sulfide in the case of sepia toning. Nowadays of course a tone can be applied more straightforwardly, and with less potential health impacts, using our post processing software. It can be a fun way to play with your imagery and create a completely different look and feel. Images submitted to the contest must be black and white images that have had a single tone applied to the whole image.
A beautiful shot full of mystery and appeal. The first thing that stands out to me in this image is the light - placed just right to highlight just enough detail whilst keeping the shot mainly low key and enveloped in mystery and charm. Showing enough of the skin texture and of the book, it keeps us interested whilst safeguarding the secrets of a mysterious subject. The subtle, yet effective colour grading adds a hint of nostalgia that truly suits the image. Great job!
This image exudes peace and loneliness that are thoroughly compelling. I love the contrast between the man, hunching alone in his boat, and the family of birds swimming together on the surface of the water not far away. The light mist above the lake adds great mood to the image and works beautifully in further separating the stark figure of the man against the dark stormy sky. A fantastic shot that tells a story I certainly want to know more about. Well done!
