Colourful Flowers

November 2024

Beautifully balanced colour, an intriguing atmosphere and a fiendishly tricky technique – this image has it all. The photographer has submerged flowers in water, adding milk and coloured ink to create a magical flow. The shape of the arrangement is spot on, with plenty to interest the eye, and a clear understanding of colour theory.

There’s a lovely sense of movement to this image, as though the poppy is a dancer, fanning out a skirt. The muted colours are well suited to the mood of the picture. The focus is where you want it to be, in the centre, and the aperture (f/2.5) has stopped the yellow blooms in the background from becoming distracting. It’s a lovely shot.

The photographer has definitely done the right thing here: filling the frame with the fold of the petals and taking care not to let any distracting elements or highlights enter the edges of the frame. However, the image is soft overall and lacks detail. To overcome these issues, a tripod and a smaller aperture would help. The idea is wonderful, but the execution needs a little work.
