Composite Landscapes

June 2022

Great concept. The lighting matches the combined images really well. I'd love to see you give this shot another go with a bit more attention to detail, especially in the masking of the kids. Even cropping to image slightly to avoid the sharp line of the missing feet. Great idea and I'm sure the kids would love to look back on this photo.

You've created a wonderful scene and story with this image! A night time steam train ride over a calm mirror finish lake. It's an image that draws you in and ignites your imagination. My mind drifts to thoughts of everything from The Polar Express to Murder on the Orient Express, even the Hogwarts Express! From a technical viewpoint, the train placement is balanced well and the subtle blur on the reflection is a nice touch. The brightness of the stars add to the dreaminess of the overall image. Congratulations on your creation!

Unfortunately the first thing I noticed was the slightly tilted horizon. But that's just something I personally look out for. This made the ethereal hand a surprise to me on first viewing. Although it is clear to me now, it still fits the tone of the rest of the image really well. I do like the concept, and my only advice would be to use the idea with some different subject matter in the photo. Great work matching the tones.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** NOTE: All image elements must have been shot by the uploading photographer. Adding a dramatic sky to your landscape image can work wonders, but needs some skill too. It can also be a giveaway when a bright sky is paired with a dull landscape that was obviously shot under very different conditions. But the sky is definitely not the limit for composite landscape imagery, and with some good taste, well shot elements, and appropriately applied understatement, the sum can be very much more than the parts and produce impactful imagery that would be impossible to achieve with one capture.
