Composition - bang in the middle

March 2026

I loved the concept of this shot and thought it fit with the theme incredibly well. I think the use of black and white really shows off all the shapes and lighting really well. I do think that when creating composites like this you have to be really careful with the blending, the eye is incredibly sensitive to these things. Particularly repeating shapes, like I can see you've used the same image element just to the right of the central subject with jumps out a bit. Hair is very difficult to isolate well too and you can tell a little in various places. Still the concept is great and it's still a very pleasing image. Well done and keep at it!

This close up shot really helps the viewer concentrate on the beautiful textures and forms of the horse, and it adds a lovely abstract quality to it too. The lighting is also stunning, drawing out all the contours of the face, it makes me want to just reach out and touch it.

Such a spectacular shot. I enjoyed thinking about all the level of how this fit into our theme. The obvious of the subject in the centre of frame but also the moon being bang in the middle of the line between earth and the sun and you the photographer being bang in the middle of that line too. My tiny critique is your signature in the corner. In an image as stark and strong as this it does draw the eye away for me. This is perhaps more of a persnal preference for me and it's still a incredible photograph regardless.

I just loved the super strong forms and stark lighting in this image. the way the lighting comes from behind the lighthouse puts it in silouette and makes it pop out from the sea around it. The sweep of the jetty so gracefully leads the eye through the picture, it's very satisfying and beautiful.

I thought this really exemplified the theme of the competition. And I love the calm it exudes from the use of long exposure to flatten and soften all the water. The muted colour palette adds to the calm too. A very satisfying image, well done.

I love so many things about this image. The way the super soft focus draws the viewers eye right down to the subject and this effect is compunded by the repeating lines and seats that travel through the photo. The soft lighting on the lady is quite beautiful. Also the colours follow this theme of repetition with the blue of the seats repeating and complimenting the blue denim of the clothes. There's also intreague in the subjects gaze, out beyond where we the viewer can see. And finally there's an intimacy in observing someone lost in a moment unawear they are being seen. A fantastic picture, well done.

A really innovative angle here. It creates such a fanstastically graphic shot; and makes the viewer do a double take, something I really relish in a photo. The colour palette is very satisfying too with lots of repetition between the different elements. And I love the contrast in textures between the sharp grapics, the smooth of the grass and the undulating ripples of the dresses.

A real cartier-bresson "decsisive moment" in this image. Which perfectly exemplifies our theme. And the snowfall is such a beautiful addition that really elevates the shot. I think the use of blakc and white is perfect too, doubly enhancing the cartier-bresson effect and drawing out all the beautiful textures and forms within the photo.

There were many pictures of birds in the competition but I thought this was particularly innovative to use the surroundings to create interest and play to the theme so well. It really demonstrates how the placement of a subject and use of environs can elevate an image.

A beautful moment captured here. All the colours work so well together. While I can see the reasons for the crop used with elements peeking into frame I think a more confident, tighter crop would have made an even stronger image. Like using the pipe around the step as the limits to the frame. A small critique though and still a wonderful shot. Well done.

Such an immaculate angle and timing in this shot. A combination of luck in being in the right place at the right time and real skill to create this image. There's a real satisfaction created in the moment just before contact with the water. I think there's also a playful humor in the ducks face being so straight on to camera. Great work, well done.

There were many images of flowers in this competition but this was my favourite. The lighting is simply beautiful and gives a real painterly quality. This quality is enhanced by the black background too. Such a delicate image, all the textures and the wonderful colour of the flower a real feast for the eyes.

I'm obsessed with this shot. It's real a skill to be able to take something so day-to-day and give it such presence. The use of black and white gives it a timless quality and focuses the viewer on the shapes and textures beautifully. And everything, of course, is bang in the middle.

This image has such incredible power. The movement in it is truley tangible, you can really feel the rage of the storm. I love the way the ground is so flat and featureless as it allows the viewer to concentrate on the spectacle of the tornado. My one tiny critique is, for whatever reason, there's a slim white line at the bottom and on the right which really pulls your eye away from the image itself. Such a fantastic shot though, congratulations.

Such a fun shot. I love super macro images like this, it's like a view into another world. I find it reminiscent of war of the worlds. It's a real skill to be able to get the focus so perfect and I think it fits wonderfully with the theme. The green background really contrasts with the colours of the fly and makes it pop too.

You could argue that visual compositions can all be placed somewhere on a scale of strong to weak. Strong composition = good. Weak composition = bad. You could also argue that strong compositions have a deliberateness about them, a plan, and that gives certainty and strength to the image. If that be the case, say hello to the images where you place your main subject plum in the middle of the picture. Can you get more deliberate than that? Are we clear on the brief then? The main subject of the image, placed right in the middle of the frame. Any subject, any image dimensions.
