The photographer has here managed to turn a simple subject into an enchanting and eerie scene through creative use of light and composition. Through skillful placement of the artificial light, a fascinating eerie glow is cast against the dark sky, and the texture and silhouette of the main mushroom are beautifully highlighted. The aperture nicely blurs the moss in the background, giving the illusion of depth that we would normally find in a real scale forest. The main mushroom is positioned off to one side following the rule of thirds. This choice greatly benefited this image. In fact, in this position, the larger, curved mushroom 'frames' the scene, leading the viewer's eye towards the centre of the enchanted woodland, where the two smaller mushrooms stand against the glow. This is a beautiful, unique and creative shot that certainly deserves praise.
Great technical mastery is required to take a shot like this. The first thing to catch my attention is the depth of field: it perfectly separates the subject (fully sharp) from the background (all heavily blurred). This makes the image tidy and elegant, all whilst allowing the subject to beautifully stand out. Then it's the shutter speed, perfectly selected to freeze an action as fast as this in pin sharp detail, tiny water drops included. It's hard enough to capture a moment in time such as this, but to do it in a way that is so classy and so well executed is something else entirely. A fantastic image. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** The rule of thirds is a compositional guideline or ‘rule of thumb’ that can be employed in order to strengthen the composition of one’s images. It advises that prominent vertical or horizontal features within the image, such as a horizon, a tree, or a main portrait subject, be placed one third of the way into the image, either vertically or horizontally, in order to give the most pleasing composition for the viewer. In reality of course one often relies more on gut feel, and not all scenes offer the possibility of using this rule. Do please use the Not on Brief button sparingly in this contest, as a degree of latitude can be employed in using the rule.
