Documentary in black and white

This stunning dynamic photograph could have been taken on a film set it's that dramatic. Documentary photography is combining storytelling, art and the world we see. This does all of those thing together perfectly. The juxtaposition between the main two elements of the silhouetted boat of amazed onlookers and the presence of the helicopter emerging from the mist is lovely and can not be bettered in terms of composition. The photographer has done an incredible job technically to react to this situation in a split second in creating such a superb and intriguing documentary photograph that amazes. It really has the wow factor. Very well done. Incredible shot.

A stunning image that literally shows us a rites of passage moment between the generations and the unseen marching of time. This beautifully judged group portrait showcases the known rituals that the women have probably been through before whilst the young boy is held close by the woman behind. His stare to camera is haunting as the others unaware of the cameras presence show their respect in the positioning of their arms and the head scarfs they wear. The tight crop works well as we get to see the situation in full detail focusing on the expressions etched within the faces. A sombre and respectful photograph. Very well done.

This stunning visual image is full of contradictions. The suit and clothes they wear is in contrast to what they are doing in preparing food within a makeshift kitchen. The naked light bulb framed by the back wall and side pots and pans draws all of our attention to the couple, both aware of the cameras presence. The high contrast black and white tonal range is a constant within Japanese and Asian photography and works so well in this dynamic capture. A fantastic environmental portrait that really shows us what they are doing within the space. Well done.
