We love the high contrast of this shot! The choice to keep the colour version adds to the stark difference in tone between the building and the darkness beyond. It almost looks like a tear in a black curtain, revealing a stage behind. The placement of the figure is perfect for drawing the eye too. Well done.

This is a highly unusual shot and an exciting take on the brief. The colours are beautiful and we love that the photographer has chosen to focus on a delicate subject such as these flowers, which contrast warmly against the deep blue of the twilight sky. A lovely night study.

Nothing makes better use of the nighttime than a cityscape. The detail in this shot is truly astonishing! From the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights, the exposure is perfectly blended and gives us an encompassing view of the New York skyline. A well-shot and edited image.

There is a wonderful contemplative atmosphere to this image. Many see the night as an intimidating time, rejecting the shadows as murky realms not to be explored, but this image shows off the tranquil side of the darkness. This man is experiencing the city in a way impossible during the day. Nicely spotted.

There were many shots of people walking through dark streets submitted for this round. It was the shape of the sinuous buildings that drew us to this example. The lights, colour depth and composition pull the viewer into the frame and make us want to know what is around that corner.

This shot looks far more difficult to take than one might immediately imagine! The timing, lighting and composition all come together to tell a story and give us a glimpse into this bird's nocturnal life, as it scans the blackness for its next meal. Expertly photographed.

We saw many star trail images this round so it was a popular approach to the brief. However, this one stood out to us for its simplicity and tranquillity. the subject is small so feels dwarfed by the night sky, while the exposure is perfectly matched and blended. Well done.

We really like the colour and light in this frame. It's almost like a split image, taking us into both an inside and outside setting. The view through he window provides a literal frame to focus our attention while the bright lights of the street add a wonderful contrast. Well done.

Quiet moments were always going to be a big focus for this round and this shot of a restaurant worker fits the bill. There is a very cinematic feel to the processing and the colour grade really makes the red pop without drawing us away from the man's face. A great scene.

This looks very cold! For this brief, the night sky itself should not be the main focus, so it's shots like this one that manage to capture the majesty of the stars while keeping the theme of the frame planted firmly on Earth. The lighting and colour is ideally balanced.

The days are short at this time of year so, look to capture the drama of low light. Use high contrast to your advantage for portraits, cityscapes and even astro. Experiment!

This is another frame which makes great use of darker environments.. The exposure is perfect for the subject while the colours contrast nicely against each other to create depth in the low light scene. There is a good, strong subject too, which makes the shot about more than simply the absence of ambient light.
