i was drawn to the beautiful colours. the soft pinks against the dramatic sea and sky - both in tandem together. I really well observed scene that is challenging technically to get right. It reminds me of a painting and the colours and balance within the images add to that feel. Beautiful.

This was really close to the top 10. The dash of light on the mountain and the darkened sky really add extra drama to this image. It has a metallic feel which I love and can imagine this as a large print above a fireplace. A photograph that makes me want to travel and see more of the world.

I love Venice and Carnival and this image more than any made me think about what we are all missing at present - The freedom to travel. The stunning colour within the dress has been highlighted further from the exposure and dramatic orange within the sky and how that is replicated within the lanterns. I wish I was there. Lovely photograph.

You don't always have to go to exotic places to make great images. This is a case in point. One of the few urban images within this competition. This is a cracker. I love the horseshoe highlights on the chair, the rain on the road and van to the right and the wonderful light created by the lamps. A slice of community that is very well seen and taken at night adds to the sense of drama and suspense.

The drama and tension comes from what we can't see but know is there. A beach is a stunning place we all long to be on but make a photograph in B/W, take the shot at night, use the light available and the darkness becomes the disquiet that we worry about. Is their someone hiding behind the fence out of sight? Our mind plays tricks with us and this image does suspense beautifully.

Architecture is really difficult to do well but this is an excellent example of when done well how great it can be. I love the soft sky against the sharp lines and contours of the building, the low angle adds to the feeling of power and grace of the structure. The dynamic lines and B/W really add to the graphic elements within this image. A very well constructed photograph.

This could be a scene out of a car advert. The overall hues within the dark blues work well with the splash of light on the road where the car with it's headlights come out of the dark. The elevated camera position gives us the viewer the chance to take in the whole area and this adds to the drama of the image. We just need a good soundtrack and it has everything. Lovely image.

So few portraits submitted and this really jumped out at me. The power of photography and exposure control to really add that special element to what could have been a snap has been elevated to something timeless. The rim light on the hair and side of the face adds real drama and the hood gives that additional sense of hiding. The background out of focus on a slant again adds to the drama. Just a evocative image from something so simple. Beautiful.

A great abstract image - Urban landscape as Lee Friedlander would say. The reflections made from the use of glass adds to the strange feel of the image. It has no real starting point to focus on so our eye wanders revealing more as we continue to look. The lack of perspective gives it s cubist feel like a Picasso. Unique and well seen.

Some of the best image we can take are in our own homes. An often overlooked space in which to make work but one that has become more important over the last 16 months. I feel like a detective looking for clues behind the well constructed image and the light cascading across the back wall. I want to see more of the artwork on the wall and the elements on the tables. I cant and thats the power of this image - I have to imagine.

landscape was the predominant genre within this competition so it seemed appropriate that a subject keeping with this theme would be the winner. This image jumped out at me from the foreground to background sharpness, the elevated position, the light cascading through the buildings and the increased tension and visual impact of a lightning strike - It reminded me of the great Ansel Adams classic - Moonrise, hernandez. A worthy winner.

Light is a wonderful thing. A great photograph should have a understanding of light and subject matter and this image has it all. Great technique, beautifully layered subject and that light that can only come from the heavens. Simple but evocative. This is a photograph that you want to come back to and keep looking at. Well done - Stunning Image.

A scene that we are all reminded of from childhood - How looking above reveals the world to be a giant place full of wonder and menace. The darkened flowers add to the sense of something strange.. It reminds me of the war of the worlds with triffids everywhere. A deliberate and well constructed image. Very well done.

Is it inside the church or out? Does it matter? I applaud the photographer's vision to take this image - So many would have just walked past. The text at different angles and the U missing is a gift to a photographer with vision. The light even across adds to a feel of strangeness of what we are looking at. Sometimes you look at a photograph and it's difficult to read - this is one of those. All i know is that I love it. I wish I had taken it.

In the second of our series of contests titled “Deliberately…” we’re mucking about with brightness, and seeing whether bad things really do happen when our images turn to the dark side. We learn through play, and that’s what these Deliberately contests are all about. And if anyone asks, just say that it’s low-key photography, and you’ll sound like you know what you’re doing.
