Easter

April 2014

A lovely and clean image, well composed. I’d just like to see a bit more contrast and slightly darker shadows in the duckling to make it pop out from the white background a little more.

This image really captures the beauty and essence of Easter for me. The colours and tones of the image have been perfectly captured and tastefully edited. The strongest element of this image, however, is the clarity and sharpness of the central duckling. Although a relatively straightforward and simple composition, which is by no means a bad thing, it completely draws my eye to the centre of the frame. So for those combined reasons, this is my winning image for the Easter competition.

An adorable image, and I can totally see why it's been popular in the live crowd vote. Although for me it’s a little too soft and I’d have liked to see a little more detail and depth in the baby's face and hat just to draw the eye into the frame.

This is so very close to the Top 10. I love the light bokeh in the background, and the simplicity of a single flower and stem. The only issue for me is that the flower doesn’t pop out from the background enough. It needs a little more contrast and possibly the highlights being increased, especially the white petals.

I love the feelings that this image conjures up, thinking of those glorious summer evenings just around the corner. I think it would have benefitted from being shot much lower to the ground - almost on the floor - and placing the whole tree against the skyline rather than what appears to be a hedgerow.

Although I completely love the chocolate element of Easter, Sergey has reminded us of the significance of Easter within Christianity. An extremely powerful image with a very clean and simple composition. The contrast of the lights in the darkness of the steps leads the eye towards the cross, which is beautifully lit. The lines and symmetry of this frame are very striking and well executed. The slight warmth in the background of the image provides a nice balance to the overall mood of the shot.

We couldn’t have an Easter image competition without a rabbit, could we?! I love this shot - the composition is excellent and the leaves in the foreground not only provide a lovely hit of colour, but also give the image some depth. The tones of the background as well as the rabbit are also excellent and tastefully edited.

Any dog owners out there will be dumbfounded by this shot. I know from experience that getting a dog to stay still whilst you take a picture is nigh on impossible, let alone with bunny rabbit ears and a basket full of coloured eggs next to them! The humour element of this shot aside, it is a very well balanced and composed image. The stare of the dog is very well focused, with a lovely depth of field, and I was particularly drawn to the tones and soft vignette within the image.

A beautiful shot, that’s very well framed. I think it would have helped to shoot this with a slightly faster shutter to reduce the hand blur, but other than that, it's an excellent frame.

This image just makes me smile - it's full of fun - and I love the tones and soft background. My only critique, and the only reason it didn’t make the Top 10, is the focus point. The egg on the right either needs to be as in focus as the one on the left, or dropped further back into the frame so it's softer like the background.

I absolutely love the colours and tones in this photo, but for me the foreground flowers are just a little too soft and I’d like to see a bit more detail and clarity. I’m being very picky with that though, it’s a gorgeous shot.

I love chocolate and Lego, so this came very close to making The top 10. It’s a brilliant and creative concept, and very well executed. Although for my taste it's slightly overexposed, and I’d have also moved the join line on the egg, or removed it from the shot, but that’s me being very picky!

I can easily see why this image has been so popular in the live crowd vote, it has a real energy and life to it. From a technical point of view it's been expertly captured - to freeze a fleeting moment like this takes great patience and skill, not to mention a steady hand. I also love the reflection in the water, creating brilliant symmetry across the frame. With a soft background and some water droplets thrown up for good measure this all makes for a brilliant image.

The innocence portrayed within this frame is second to none. Such a simple composition, but you can’t help but be drawn to the lamb's stare. The depth of field is spot on, isolating the head and helping to lead the eye into the picture - an excellent portrait.

There have been plenty of excellent floral submissions to this competition, but this one makes the Top 10 purely for its perspective. I love photographers who try to shoot things away from the normal and obvious - giving the viewer a different perspective of a subject - and this certainly achieves that.

This is a beautiful image, but it has much more potential for me - I would have like to see it shot from a different perspective. Shooting from water level would make you feel as though you’re also on the water and part of the frame.

I love this shot, especially the candle bokeh in the distance. I’d really like to have seen it shot and framed much tighter into the girl's face - making her a stronger focal point within the image -and increasing the strength of the bokeh in the background.
