Fascinating insects

February 2021

Great stack of this Otiorhynchus sp weevil, the colors, pose and composition make this a very strong image, the amount of detail captured with the stack brings out the complex anatomy of the subject. The image would greatly benefit from a boost in exposure

Excellent use of shallow depth of field, this image is a perfect example of how to enhance the subject by controlling the ways the surroundings appear. The post production work is very interesting, creating the reflection makes the ordinary space where the bee was found look ethereal like.

Beautiful stack! the specimen is well groomed and perfectly posed for the portrait. Choosing to reveal more than just the subjects head gives the overall composition an artistic feeling. The crop works great and the background colors complement very well the subject. Good use of shadows and the post production work is very clean.

Wonderful stack of this sleeping bee, great use of selective focus, as it allows the background to mix well with the subject. the choice of color for the background accentuates extremely well the colors of the bee, creating a very pleasant over all image.

Strong capture with an excellent pose of the subject, over all this is a fantastic stack. The direction of the light source gives the subject great depth despite the fact of it been a stack. I feel this photograph would benefit by the use of a horizontal crop, however now days square seems to become the norm for social media. Thank you for sharing your work

This image tells a splendid story that leaves you wondering; I'm sure it was very difficult to capture at such open aperture (F4.5), however, that choice of aperture paid off, as the background colors were wonderfully picked up. Great use of the focal plane. Thank you for been part of the contest

By the size of the prey (dolly fly) you can tell how small this robber fly really is! outstanding light and diffusion with good control of the highlights. This hand held stack is vey clean and well elaborated in post production. the color rendition of both subjects is well balanced. Thank you for entering the contest!

Patience is a virtue! what a wonderful capture, the focal plane is right where it's needed and the image is well illuminated and diffused. The use of the MP-E means having to get very close to the subject, making this kind of photographs more difficult to obtain. perfect timing on the take off, a very graceful pose!
Congratulations!

What a jewel these Cuckoo wasps are! Great capture and color rendition of this beautiful wasp, the overall composition is clean and brings good emphasis on the subject, light diffusion is spot on and the focal plane covers the right amount of detail. ( Sleeping insects offer the opportunity for focus stacking, making a superb image like this one simply outstanding ) Thank you for participating in the contest

Weevils are fascinating creatures, their scales is not something that can usually be noticed with the naked eye. The angle that was chosen for this stack gives the image a good sense of space, while capturing the subject in great detail. Great work! Thank you for participating in the contest

Very well captured image, the focal plane is perfectly centered allowing for a great amount of detail to be picked up by the camera sensor. The colors in the subjects and background complement each other well. the use of vignetting frames the image well. Thank you for participating in the contest

Wonderful image, the framing and composition depict very well the narrative of the moment the image was captured, the focal plane is in the right place allowing for the right elements to be in focus. the movement of the wings is on point; capturing insects in flight requires lots of practice and patience, well done!

Captivating image, Very good use of DOF, it creates a beautiful separation of the subject and its environment. Natural light photographs are difficult to get in perfect focus, perhaps a different angle of the focal plane would help get more of the subject in focus.Thank you for participating in the contest
