Fashion - clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle, and body posture that are specific to a particular period or place. In photography we tend to think of portraiture, often full-length, that is advertising clothing or beauty products, and gracing the pages of a magazine or a billboard. And for this contest we’re focussing on just that - fashion portraiture that has that look of an advert or a magazine spread. It might be straight, it might be quirky, maybe in a studio or maybe out on location, but it is likely to look deliberate, with a focus on what the subject is wearing, and without the feel of a snapshot.
Love the subject matter!!! Absolutely awesome subject & colour palette! Absolutely fantastic connection with photographer & subject. More on the street fashion photography side..... But one massive issue - the focus is on the wall & not the subject. Happens when shooting fast in the street but perfects with time & experience. Messyness of the wall also needs tidying ideally plus better light on the subject's face rather than the wall. Would she have moved into a better lit position if she was asked? Can you carry a small reflector with you in the future? I'm sensing from the connection that she most likely would've obliged to to spend 5-20 mins creating other images if she was asked to :)) Please do keep perfecting - amazing raw talent for street fashion photography here!
This image really stood out to me - well done!!
Overall concept - great! Setting great! Suit + Hat - great styling Model - great & expression great
If I was being reeeaaaallly picky - here's what I would improve:
Suit position - Suits are notoriously difficult to shoot as they ruffle. The ruffles on the sleeves wouldn't do for a fashion image promoting clothing.
Model position - the leaning over in the frame is creating the perception of the model's legs being rather small in comparison.
Editing - remove flecks on suit
Gloves - Feel like the gloves & suit are both fighting to be the hero.
Lighting - could a reflector have been used to light the eyes a little?
With those aspects fixed, I think you'd have an A1 image!!
Verrry nice! Super well done!
Super congratulations on the winning image! It is the image which stood out to me the most in terms of being a real fashion advertising image within a magazine. It really is captivating shot. Probably best suited to a swimwear ad. A slight change of angle may make it suited to boho type of jewellery. Maybe perfume.
Aspects of this image which stand out the most are:
Aspects which could do with a bbit of adjustment (fore me):
Overall it is a beautiful image very on brief!! Massive congratulations again.
Ultimately have gone with a commend on this image because the effort which has gone into the planning to recreate this look is really very decent. The colour grading is also excellent - it really feels like a breakfast at Tiffanys scene. There are a number of aspects which could do with a bit of improvement for the next attempt at the same shoot:
Mascara! It's very clumpy Do a colab with a make up artist next time around - get the lips, cheeks & eyes looking A1
Hair - just a tad unkempt. Have a hair artist next time. Audrey Hepburn had an immaculate hair do - in fact immaculate everything (lol) which is all the more difficult to recreate
Lighting - move the lighting to the other side or use a reflector to avoid the shadows
Gloves - tighter fit would be optimum (I know it's tricky to achieve this one)
The railing/stairs in the backdrop feel a teensy bit too modern (this is a very picky point of course)
It's all these little details which really transform a fashion image & you definitely have all the raw ingredients going for you. Super well done!

Super nice. Love the lighting & the highlights. Facial expression is strong - good eye connection with the lens & viewer. This would have made top ten with a few points re- addressed as fashion photography is highly detailed work with what often feels like millions of details to take into consideration. The main point for me is that I'm not sure what the main aspect of this photograph is. The eyes of the model seem the most striking to me but feels slightly obstructed by the hand position which feels a bit large in the frame for me. Is the main point the 'dior' logo? or the watch? Or the rings? Or the eyes? Or the necklace? From a styling perspective - the grey of the trousers feels a little distracting - it feels like a step too far off course with the rest of the colour palatte (for me). Bit too much highlight on crotch - not meaning to be crude. Also the texture of the trousers feel like it doesn't quite align with the model & rest of the styling - that's being extremely finickety with detail of course. What would the Dior stylist combine with this Tee? The ring on the ring finger - it's turned to the side & I wonder if it would have been stronger to simply remove the ring finger ring entirely ( there's already a watch, necklace, tattoo & large dior logo). I also wonder if removing the watch & turning the arm to show the tattoo may have provided a cleaner image where the viewer was more sure of where to focus. These are extreme details I have highlighted here of course. Extreme details are the difference between an A1 fashion image & not. You're obviously a very skilled photographer & I congratulate you on an overall fantastic image & look forward to seeing your more of your work. Very well done!
I had to leave a review for this absolutely FANTASTIC image. It looks as if it has been meticulously planned & executed shoot from the make up top hair to styling. From a technical perspective it is brilliant - photographing shiny things (the yellow plastic in this case) is no small feat. The lighting is wonderful. Model posture & expression is on point. Comp is n nice - I do wonder if a wider comp showing a bit more waist could have provided an edgier feel to team with the edgy styling would have added an extra element?
The reason this is not in the top ten is that the brief for the competition is this:
"that is advertising clothing or beauty products, and gracing the pages of a magazine or a billboard. It might be straight, it might be quirky, maybe in a studio or maybe out on location, but it is likely to look deliberate, with a focus on what the subject is wearing, and without the feel of a snapshot."
It feels like more of a creative image for me, rather than an advertisement. And there were stronger images fitting the 'ad' brief.
In this image I'm not quite sure what would be advertised here. Not quite enough emphasis on make up, hair or clothes to properly advertise any of these aspects individually.
Please please do keep creating & showing your work. It is truly excellent.
Some lovely aspects here! Lighting is excellent - emphasis on models face & models bag. Pose of model is also very good - niely mirrored trianglar shapes with legs & elbows. Feel like the hand on hat could be adjusted slightly to be a bit stronger. Aspects for improvement are the backdrop - quite busy & a bit distracting. The crop is bothersome - would have like extra space around the bag & head. Styling also a little bothersome (this is entering the finer detail zone). Would've like the white of the hat & bag to match. The oval holes in the top don't go with the squareness of the bag (for me). Getting even more intricate - whilst I love the messyness of the hair style & messy hair in this way suits the image very well - it would be stronger if it was messy in a more style way (frizz on the model's left side). Overall is an a technically well focussed & well lit image with a fabulously interesting model. Well done!
Ooooohhhh - the focus :( This could have reached a much higher category with the technical execution corrected. It seems that the focus is on the leg & the rest is slightly blury. Nice triangular shaping on shoulders, arms & legs. Hair feels slightly too unstyled. The dress is extremely puffy at the the top & does require ma very specific type of model to pull that off successfully - very tall, long neck, large long face, big lips - African originated models are quite good for this kind of outfit from both shape & colour palatte perspective. Potentially a full length shot too to bring a bit further balance to the shapes here. A great effort though & I hope we see more of your work in the future!
Love the rawness of this shot! Looks shot on the fly rather than styled. Would have liked the outfit to be a bit more 'fashion' London is tricky in terms of business for shooting! I wonder if you could have slightly moved left & covered the cone/bike/post in the background with the phone box? Overall showing great raw talent!
Really like this - very nice job done here. Cream colour palate with a splash of colour lovely. May I kindly suggest a few tweaks?
match the nail colour to the hair. Ensure toe colour matches nails.
More negative space above the raised foot
Tidy hair
finger position on left hand looks unnatural
zipper poking down on the right legging could do with being photoshopped out
So many details go into a fashion image - it's incredible. It's why we need so many people on set to adjust miniscule details.
Overall super nice though - well done!
Love this image - it demands attention. Striking colour palette with nice cohesion throughout the finished piece the splash of white in both sunglasses & number sign top right of head offers the viewer a strong focus.
It has been ranked as 'commend' however with a slight change during shoot or some editing it could have scored much higher.
The main downside aspect is that part of the backdrop is a little too distracting. The chain lower left 'touches' the jacket's belt. Potentially moving the model right of left to either cover the chain or put in a little negative space may have worked. Alternatively could have been removed in editing.
The background could do with a bit of a tidy up. Whilst personally I like the lighter orange square of colour in bottom left corner - it feels like it balances wiith the white sign top right of model's hair. On the lighter orange square there are some metal pieces probably best removed to make a cleaner shot. Plus the black marks on background by models left arm/shoulder/left hip. Possibly would look stronger if the black line on the background behind the chain were removed. removing these aspects from the backdrop would bring greater focus to the model & clothing/sunglasses.
Overall v cool image!! Keep shooting - nice eye for comppsition & the model's pose & expression are both excellent!
Love the lighting! Possibly switch the highlights on the right side of face & left fingers down just a smidge in lightroom?
There is a super easy (although time consuming in terms of prep - preparation is a massive part of fashion photography) way to transform this shot into an A1 image next time you shoot. It's to adjust the styling.
It's a moody edgy lighting & a more sultry or edgy/contemporary looking model would work really well! Along with either elegant clothing or edgy/street clothing.
Find a make up/hair artist to co-lab with - possibly a stylist too.
Then you've already got the technical aspects covered which can be experimented with.
Overall fantastic image!!
Lovely colours & technical aspects here! Few aspects which would transform this image into a much higher category. For me I feel like I'd prefer a little more negative space above the model's head. Model has reasonably strong expression - could be stronger. Hip & overall body position v nice. Although the shoulders feel a bit large in in comparison to hips for me - asking the model to stand a little straighter (not shoulders forward) plus pulling in the elbows a little tighter would reduce the weight of shoulders in frame. Can't 100% tell if this model has a large shoulder to hip ratio but I suspect so, which is trickier to work with in this kind of image - especially if one was going for a feminine feel. If going for masculine body shapes - you've got it down but feel the styling doesn't quite support that 100%.
Both hand positions look a little unnatural.
The last aspect is the clothing itself. It doesn't feel like an outfit that a woman would actually wear or desire to wear. Which of course is key in fashion photography - creating a lifestyle feel which entices the viewer to be that. Bit too many contrary textures for me - choker wavy detail/lace of bra/bracelet with round detail/bracelet with straight detail.
Goodness - what a lot of feedback! I hope I haven't been toooo picky. Fashion images are insanely detailed to pull off effectively with a lot of considerations.
Overall & especially technically very nice!!!
What a beautiful image!! Love the composition. Love the structure of the backdrop. Model position pretty awesome but if I was being exceptionally attentive to detail I would say I'd like to see the heel of the left shoe a smidgeon away from touching the right toe tip. Maybe more obviously designer shoes would fit this style of image better. Maybe no bows on shoes
Hair position great!
Two aspects of this image which are notoriously difficult to shoot are 1. Suits 2. Cars.
With regard to the suit. The jacket is quite wrinkled. Does need to be smooth to transform into a higher category image.
With regard to car - it's the reflections. Cars being big shiny objects are a nightmare for reflections. Would need to shoot a dry shot without model & then blend together in editing plus a fair amount of editing to reduce/smooth out the reflections elsewhere on the body (plus any imperfections on the cars bodywork).
Really beautiful image though & has a feel of a real ad campaign.
Suit jacket poses
You know what - this is a pretty cool image. Backdrop is fantastic. Colour profile/grading is nice. The bounce of light either side of subjects head & highlight on nose is lovely. Highlight on right hand bit overcooked. Triangular shapes created by right elbow + left leg very nice & of course a classic for eliciting a fashion feel.
The bit which bothers me is the crotch & the holes in the crotch (lol). Plus the trainers & socks aren't the most inspiring from a styling perspective.
It has a feel of being shot 'on the fly' whereas truly impactful fashion portriture has a lot of planning which goes into it to ensure every fine detail is addressed & aligned.
Few tweaks & you'd have an even cooler image than it is already. Well done.
Gah - this is an absolutely beautiful image. Great pose. Great composition. Great use of tube lighting. Just one little thing is that the focus seems to be on stairs.... Please redo with the suvject in sharper focus & this would definitely score a lot higher! If I was being extremely attentive to detail, it would be even better if the model was styled in a way to match the scene a little better too... But aside from this I absolutely love it!
Stunning Stunning Stunning! Matching shoes + Bag = lovely. Mirrored shapes on the tights, shoes, bag & leg position.
The one thing I wish is that there was nail polish on the finger nails - probably black. Plus maybe a little blurring/smoothing of the highlight on the black of the open door.
Excellent colour grading v well suited to the theme. Feels v cohesive.
Absolutely beautiful image! Super well executed.
