Fast food, street food, dirty food, whatever you want to call it, it always hits a spot at the right time. For me this picture encapsulates the late night, hazey vision of fast, dramatically cooked steet kebabs. The backlite smoke creates the atmosphere of drama and suspense, you can quickly imagien the smells and sounds of the scene. The eye is quickly drawn to the stack of new york Pretzels, illuminated by the shaft of light on the left. The eye the looks towards the serene smiling face of the man in the middle glancing up at an order perhaps. And i love how the smoke filled scene in the middle obscures the face of the chef. The black and white of this shot really emphasizes the detail and lighting of the scene.. Fantastic work.
To me, this image really demonstrates the hustle needed by cooks and chefs to get food out on time. In truth, when most people opt for fast food, they are salivating at the thought of that first bite. Overwhelmed by the smells it can be hard to be patient. Heavily using the rule of thirds, this picture makes for great storytelling, and reminds me of everything i love about my local kebab man.

This image is a really great example of why lighting is so important. Taken in a really hard flat light, perhaps the midday sun, all of the texture and shape of the meat is washed out. By using several light sources and experimenting with softer light, you can draw attention to the silky fat of the meat, or knarley crispy edges better, making it look more edible! That is always tricky when snapping on the go, but try casting a shadow over the subject or getting a hand in there to cast slim shadows and interact with it.

Away from the meticulously presented meals of Instagram feeds and high-end restaurants, fast food and street food offer a more everyday alternative that is both endlessly varied and satisfying. This isn't just a look at food, however, but also at the culture and atmospheres that surround these global pit stops. There's a human element to street food that makes is a particularly enthralling photo subject. So, what's for dinner?
