Great contest!

This is a very beautiful portrait in a very classical setting. The photo immediately brings to mind the paintings of Johannes Vermeer.

One of the most important features of Vermeer was its use of light. In the paintings, the source of the light was the window and the light was always on the left, just like on this photograph.

To me this is a perfect example of how Old Masters can inspired todays portrait photographers, without a specific painting from the painter's oeuvre being copied exactly.

This photo is a beautifully composed piece of portraiture that exudes a dreamy, ethereal quality. The use of soft, natural light streaming in from the side highlights the model's delicate features and adds depth to the scene. The subject’s pose is elegant and fluid, with her fingers entwined in her hair, creating a sense of introspection or gentle self-expression.

The composition of the image is balanced, with a good use of negative space on the left and the architectural elements of the staircase subtly framing the scene. Overall, it’s a stunning portrait that captures both vulnerability and quiet strength, demonstrating excellent technical and artistic skill.

Thank you for you participation.

This photo is a winner for me because it tells a very moving story through the facial expression and posture of the subject.

The slightly angled perspective creates a natural and realistic depiction. The subject’s downward gaze directs the viewer’s attention inward, creating a sense of quiet reflection and intimacy. The muted background effectively isolates the subject, leaving no distraction from the emotional resonance of the portrait. This allows the viewer to feel a personal connection with the model, as if they are getting a close-up look into her personal world and feelings.

The portrait is a tribute to Renaissance and Baroque portraiture techniques. The naturalistic depiction of the subject, with attention to detail and soft lighting, is reminiscent of works by painters such as Vermeer or Rembrandt. The clothing, while simple, evokes a sense of accuracy from that time period, further reinforcing the historical reference.

This photo skillfully uses soft, diffuse lighting that is reminiscent of classic Old Master portraits. The light falls softly on the subject's face, accentuating their delicate features and creating a subtle three-dimensional effect. The shadows are not overly harsh, adding a sense of calm and introspection. The lighting also enhances the textures in the subject's clothing and the natural tone of their skin, contributing to a painterly aesthetic.

Portrait photography often involves eye contact with the model. In social contact, people look at each other: they exchange glances and maintain eye contact. But at the same time, we are constantly looking away from those faces. Eye contact lasts only a 'moment', and normally the gazes do not cross.

Here, the photographer deliberately chooses an averted gaze, which in all its simplicity creates a very strong and intimate portrait.

Thank you for submitting this masterpiece to the contest. Congratulations on winning first place.

Best regards, Ben

This kind of 'regents group portraits' was very popular in Dutch Golden Age painting during the 17th century, and in the 18th century.

Famous painters as Frans Hals, Cornelis van der Voort, Bartholomeus van der Helst or Jan de Bray all produced this kind of paintings.

About the photo: This photograph is a masterful tableau, drawing clear inspiration from classical group compositions reminiscent of Renaissance or Baroque art, yet with a distinctly modern, rustic charm. The setting—centered around a table laden with food, crafts, and everyday objects—creates an engaging narrative that feels both communal and intimate.

The use of lighting is particularly striking. The warm glow of the candles casts dramatic highlights and shadows, emphasizing textures in the wooden table, the food, and the clothing of the participants. The interplay of light and shadow adds depth and directs the viewer’s gaze across the various characters and objects, each of which contributes to the larger story. The shadow of the candlesticks on the wall in the background further amplifies the mood, hinting at the passage of time or a spiritual undercurrent.

Thank you for participating in this contest.

The idea is great, the set-up is well done, the photography is taken perfectly from a technical perspective and there is a story that's been told. But to make this a winner I miss the emotion that should be evoked, probably because of the rather hard light. The use of a more atmospheric kind of light, for example like the Rembrandt effect, would add a lot of value to this picture, and probably create a masterpiece that way.

The chiaroscuro is one of the canonical painting modes of the Renaissance. Artists known for using the technique include Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Vermeer.

The same technic has been used to create this photograph, and it is handled beautifully. The subject's face is evenly illuminated, highlighting delicate features without losing detail in the shadows. The background is dark yet textured, ensuring the subject stands out prominently.

The framing is classic and minimalistic, focusing entirely on the subject. The off-center positioning adds sophistication to the image while maintaining symmetry in her outfit and headpiece.

This image evokes the feel of a historical portrait, reminiscent of Dutch Golden Age paintings. The clean lines and muted colors enhance the overall elegance and calmness.

Thank you so much for joining this contest.

A close-up of Ophelia, clearly inspired by the 1852 masterpiece of Millais.

Where Ophelia is usually depicted in full size in paintings (also Millais painted her this way), the photographer chooses here a close-up of the face, adding a personal touch to the theme. This gives the photograph a special feeling and makes the image quite unique as an 'Ophelia' photo. The photograph tell a story, was taken in good lightning, the colors are very harmonious. The photographer played with depth of field and there are no distracting elements or mergers.

Choosing to place the model on the right site of the photo, leaves room to move the eye in the direction of travel.

This is a picture of a high technical quality and of high visual interest.

Thank you for participating in this contest.

This is a stunning photograph that blends fine art and portraiture seamlessly. The use of chiaroscuro lighting (strong contrasts of light and shadow) mimics the techniques of old masters like Rembrandt. This adds depth and a painterly quality to the image, giving it a timeless appeal. The warm tones in the background, combined with the dark, rich colors of the attire, create an elegant and cohesive color scheme. he model’s gaze is captivating and exudes a sense of mystery and sophistication, perfectly complementing the overall style of the photo. he fur hat and luxurious curls evoke a historical, regal feel, enhancing the artistic narrative. The red lips add a striking focal point, drawing attention to the face.

A woman in red with a pale skin can be found in several Renaissance paintings. In this photography the striking red palette dominates the image, with the subject centrally framed to focus on their expression and elaborate attire. The use of red creates an intense, almost theatrical mood. The subject's direct gaze, combined with the high-contrast makeup and dramatic red backdrop, evokes a sense of melancholy and mystery. This image feels reminiscent of Renaissance or performance art influences. The headpiece adorned with roses and the luxurious fabric add to the regal and ceremonial feel of the photo. Thank you for submitting this beautiful portrait for this contest.

This photograph creates a natural and intimate vide. The soft focus on the subject contrasts with the darker background, highlighting the model’s flowing hair. Gentle, directional lighting creates depth and texture, particularly in the hair and fabric. The relaxed posture, thoughtful gaze, and delicate styling imbue the image with an ethereal, romantic quality. It has a dreamlike and vintage appeal. Thank you for your participation to my contest.

The portrait strongly echoes the essence of Old Master paintings with its use of dramatic chiaroscuro lighting. The subdued background and the subject’s solemn expression draw the viewer’s focus entirely to the face and the ornate cross necklace.

The texture and details of the subject’s skin and hair have been captured meticulously, lending a painterly quality to the image. The composition is balanced, with the placement of the light emphasizing the subject's character and emotional depth. This photograph demonstrates a deep understanding of the Old Master aesthetic.

Thank you for submitting this portrait to the contest.

Meet the judge

These photograph evokes the style and sensibilities of portraits painted by the Old Masters, particularly through its careful composition, lighting, and attention to detail. The dim, natural lighting and earthy tones create a moody atmosphere reminiscent of Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro technique.

The subject's expression, combined with the rugged textures of the setting, tells a story, capturing both character and environment authentically. The use of props, such as the bottle, wooden table, and metal cup, adds depth and historical context.

All this makes this portrait really stands out for its environmental storytelling.

Thanks for your participation to this contest.

This photograph beautifully captures the essence of a portrait inspired by the old masters, evoking themes of realism and storytelling reminiscent of works by artists like Vermeer or Millet. The use of soft, natural light streaming through the window is masterful, creating a chiaroscuro effect that highlights the subject’s face and adds depth to the setting. The muted tones and earthy palette mimic the aesthetic of Dutch Golden Age paintings, grounding the composition in authenticity. The balance between the subject, the rustic interior, and the surrounding objects tells a compelling story. The diagonal lines of the staircase and window frames direct the viewer's eye toward the subject, anchoring her as the focal point. While the subdued lighting is fitting, slightly more contrast or brightness on the subject’s face could draw even greater attention to her expression without compromising the mood. The red cloth visible in the doorway adds a splash of color, but it slightly distracts from the otherwise earthy harmony. A subtler tone might better align with the overall composition.

Overall Impression: This photograph is an excellent interpretation of the "portraits inspired by the old masters" theme. Its attention to lighting, setting, and emotional depth creates a timeless image that feels both artistic and authentic.

This portrait is highly successful in its adherence to the contest's theme, showcasing technical skill and artistic vision. It effectively channels the spirit of Old Master paintings while maintaining originality. This portrait excels in character depiction, with the subject's ruddy complexion, piercing gaze, and subtle pose, which feels painterly. The props, including the top hat and tin mug, contribute to the historical narrative, while the textured wall enhances the setting's authenticity. The use of color, especially the muted reds and browns, is evocative of 17th- or 18th-century portraiture. Thank you for joining my contest.

This is what I call getting inspired by... with a personal touch!

And the portrait 'works'. The yellow scarf and blue headband immediately draw the viewer's gaze to the model's face. Under the left eyes a perfect triangle lighting appears. Then the gaze moves to the bubble gum, from where the chin line directs attention to a very nice attribute: the EarPods.

The soft contrast between light and shadow, and the model's soft but confident facial expression, give the photo the necessary calm.

Thank you for submitting this photo to the contest, and thank you for you creativity. Congratulations with the third podium place in this contest.

The photograph employs a striking use of chiaroscuro lighting, evoking a brooding and contemplative mood. The subject’s intense gaze, framed by his long white beard and distinctive tattoos, creates a compelling narrative. The use of props, such as the beret and cane, adds layers to the character portrayed, resembling the storytelling aspects often found in Old Master portraits.

The texture and interplay of light and shadow are handled skillfully. The modern elements (tattoos and watch) add a modern twist to the classical inspiration.

This portrait stands as a unique and bold interpretation of the theme.

Thanks a lot for your participation to this contest.

In this contest I would like to see your portrait photos that are inspired by paintings of the 'Old Masters'. Please do not enter photos of paintings, nor photos with added paint effects. The timeless works of old painters are often a source of endless inspiration for portrait photographers, whether you like the unique Rembrandt lighting or artworks such as 'the girl with the pearl earring' by Vermeer.

'Girl with a rose' was a recurring theme among Renaissance artists. However, this photo reminds me of a painting from a later period: 'A la Recherche du Temps Perdu' by the French painter Charles-Amable Lenoir, from the early 20th century. This photograph succeeds in channeling the spirit of old-master paintings while maintaining a modern photographic aesthetic. The combination of mood, styling, and technical excellence makes it highly compelling and visually impactful. Thank you for participating in this contest.

It is very clear which painting was the inspiration here, so the photo fits perfectly within the definition of this contest. This is a photo with beautiful use of light, of high technical quality and a beautiful color scheme. However, I miss some creativity in this photo. Despite that, still recommended!

This photograph is a stunning study of form, texture, and emotion, presented in an artistic and evocative manner. The subject's pose, with her back turned and her head lifted toward the light, exudes a sense of vulnerability and grace, reminiscent of classical figurative art. The composition effectively draws the viewer’s attention to the natural curvature of the body, emphasizing beauty in its raw, unadorned form.

The use of translucent golden fabric is particularly striking, adding a layer of softness and fluidity to the image. The rich tones of yellow contrast beautifully with the subdued, cool gray background, creating a harmonious balance between warmth and neutrality. The fabric also acts as both a framing and a grounding element, flowing around the subject in an almost ethereal manner, enhancing the image's painterly quality.

The muted backdrop and the delicate, draped textures in the background give the photograph a timeless, dreamlike atmosphere. The lighting, soft yet directional, highlights the subject’s skin and hair, bringing depth and dimensionality without overpowering the scene. The natural curls of the hair, loosely styled, contribute to the organic feel of the image.

Overall, this is a captivating portrait that blends elements of fine art photography with a modern sensibility. It demonstrates a thoughtful approach to composition, light, and texture, evoking both intimacy and a quiet strength.

I have encountered the subject of a girl with a flamingo before in portrait photography, for example with the Dutch photographer Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk. I have no idea who of you was first ... The photo clearly is inspired by traditional art but introduces at the same time a great personal creativity.

Over the centuries, an inappropriate number of paintings have been made of reading women. This photo is composed in the classical way: a veil in the foreground, the subject in the middle and a background consisting of plants. This composition makes the photo visually attractive, and it grows into more than a simple portrait. The photo starts to become a story. Technically beautifully executed with the use of a visually attractive color scheme.

This photograph is striking and evocative, showcasing a dramatic interplay of textures, colors, and mood. The lighting is deliberately low and moody, creating a dramatic chiaroscuro effect that enhances the subject's form and textures. Shadows are soft yet deliberate, adding depth and dimension while maintaining the mystery of the setting. The reclining pose recalls classic portraiture, reminiscent of Renaissance or Baroque works. The photo exudes a sense of mystery and introspection. It blends modern photographic techniques with classical art inspirations, making it both timeless and contemporary. This is a visually compelling and conceptually rich image. It demonstrates excellent control of lighting, composition, and texture, with a strong narrative element. The photo is a fine balance between fine art and editorial photography. Thank you for your participation in this competition.

This photograph demonstrates a modern interpretation of 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring'. The use of soft, directional lighting beautifully sculpts the subject’s features, reminiscent of the techniques employed by Old Masters like Vermeer. The glow on the skin and the subtle shadows add depth and dimension, creating a timeless elegance. The composition is minimal yet impactful, with the subject's pose and gaze drawing the viewer in. The slight turn of the head and the direct yet introspective expression convey a sense of mystery and grace. The warm orange and deep blue hues evoke a luxurious and sophisticated mood.

This portrait is an exquisite representation of the contest's theme. It captures the essence of Old Master portraiture while incorporating contemporary elements. The thoughtful composition, refined lighting, and vibrant colors make this a compelling and memorable entry. It bridges historical inspiration with modern execution, successfully embodying the artistic spirit of the Old Masters.

This photograph captures a subject dressed in a so-called redcoat, a military uniform common among British, American and Napoleonic troops during the 18th century.

The subject's gaze is direct and stoic, evoking a sense of duty and pride. The use of chiaroscuro lighting, with the bright highlights against the deep shadows, draws attention to the texture of the uniform—the wool, the leather strap, and the polished metal of the bayonet. The warm red and gold tones of the soldier's coat provide vibrancy, while the subdued background ensures focus remains on the subject. The photograph feels timeless, as though it captures not just a single person but the archetype of a soldier from a bygone era. It invites the viewer to reflect on themes of sacrifice, identity, and the passage of time.

Well done and thank you for your participation to this contest.

This portrait reminds me of the paintings showing Queen Isabella Of Castile as can be viewed in Madrid's Prado Museum. They often depict the queen her with a blend of regal authority and religious devotion, reflecting her role as both a monarch and a devout Catholic leader.

This picture shows the same stylistic elements as the original paintings: the crown symbolizing het status as queen, the red fabrics and richly adorned garments and the overall artistic style of the work blending Gothic and early Renaissance influences.

In this photograph historical and fantasy elements are blended. The subject's fiery red hair, intricate metallic armor, and the ornate crown immediately draw attention, creating an image of a commanding yet enigmatic figure. Her expression is calm but resolute, conveying quiet confidence and a sense of responsibility befitting a queen or warrior monarch. The dramatic lighting enhances the textures of the armor, highlighting the detailed filigree patterns that evoke artistry and craftsmanship.

Thank you for participating in this contest.

Shakespeare's Ophelia,a young woman surrounded by powerful men who in at th end of the story drowns in a brook - has been a source of inspiration for lot's of neoclassical painters. The masterpiece of John Everett Millais (1852) is one of the best known examples.

In this picture the photographer creates his own interpretation of the theme.

Shakespeare wrote in his original works: "Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide; And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up"

The photograph evokes the same emotions as Shakespeare's words. This means the photographer knew exactly what feeling he wanted to convey. And he succeeded brilliantly. Through good composition and great use of light, the artist manages to convey the right look and feel through the photo. Thank you for participating in this contest.

This photo is definitely inspired by the masterpieces of Vermeer, who frequently depicted characters near a window (The Milkmaid, Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window, The Girl with a Wine Glass, A Lady Writing, ...). On all of this paintings the window is situated at the left site of the painting, just like in the photograph. The lighting is soft, natural, and directional, coming through the window, just like Vermeer always did. It creates a dramatic interplay of highlights and shadows, adding depth to the image. he golden tones from the stained glass contribute to a warm, inviting atmosphere, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The placement of the subject near the edge of the table creates an interesting balance, guiding the viewer's eye from the foreground to the background painting. The subject's expression and pose suggest thoughtfulness or subtle engagement with the viewer. Overall, I think this is a great Photo. Well done and thanks for joining this competition.
