We really like the abstract style of this image. The orange slices were placed on a transparent tray so the lighting could shine through. The result is a silhouette, with the high contrast drawing attention to the tiniest details within each segment. Warm lighting was a clever choice, as it creates an orange glow that complements the fruit.
We really like the arrangement of the subjects in this flat lay. Their positioning provides balance, without feeling too orderly, which fits the rustic nature of the food perfectly. A sheet of wallpaper was used as the background, chosen because it complemented the colour and texture of the fish. The even lighting mitigates any dark shadows, ensuring each detail is visible.
You don’t need a huge photo studio and oodles of kit to produce stunning product shots. Two lamps were used to light this black cherry. They were placed either side of the subject, while care was taken not to reflect too much light in the water droplets. The details are razor sharp and the vibrant green background really makes the fruit stand out, which reminds us of a pop art painting.
Food photography isn’t all about delicate arrangements. This documentary-style shot was taken at a night-time barbecue in Alice Springs, Australia. The flames from the grill light the image and the heavy low-key shadows provide plenty of mood, amplified by the rising smoke. The 1/320 sec shutter speed captured the tongs perfectly sharp, adding a human element and context to the image.
It’s not often you find a humourous food photograph, but this image is just that! Pairing the tiny figures in hazmat suits with a divisive slice of mouldy cheese is certainly an amusing concept, but this is also a well-taken photo in its own right. The background complements the texture of the cheese, and the vibrant hazmat suits pop against the surrounding muted colours.

NPOTY 2020 is a Nikon-only competition so please make sure you include the EXIF data for any images you submit. That said, this is a fantastic image, which is why we wanted to leave a review. Capturing the particles of flower and dough as if they were from the kneading process has made for an action-packed shot. The low angle is also very clever, because it emphasises the hand being forced into the dough. Thank you for entering this great image!
