Fungi

November 2023

I love the unique perspective here! As humans we often see fungus as something small from above, so I really appreciate the change in viewpoint and encountering the mushroom as a creature on the forest floor might. The Amanita Muscaria looks majestic. Great job layering the image with leaves for context, and using a high depth of field to create the sunburst, as well.

Wow, fantastic job with lighting! You’ve really made the scene come alive and created something both eerie and fantastical. I love how the shape and color of the light trails are similar to those of the fungus; I also appreciate that other plant life remains subtly visible in the background, as well. Well done!

This is such a fun image! I would not normally use the term “cute” to describe snails, but the macro approach here has made them endearing. I love seeing their tiny eyes while they explore the mushrooms. Great job with perspective and low depth of field to isolate the scene. Well done!

Way to capture the moment! I love that you’ve documented the fungus “in action” and isolated just this particular mushroom and its spore dispersal in the waning light. It almost looks like we are seeing the puffball’s breath as the fungus exhales on a cold day. Great job with perspective and lighting, too.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** In large parts of the world now is a great time to get out and look for fungi. Like a lot of nature’s smaller wonders, it’s only when you start really looking for them, that you start really finding them. And wow, how exciting to see a new kind of fungus in full fruiting bloom, hoping for a positive identification, and of course getting flat on the ground and taking some great shots of it. Your shots can be fungi in the wild, in your foraging basket, or on a plate with a knife and fork poised ready for action, it’s entirely up to you!
