A worthy winner. The hedgerow here is very typical of one in a working farm, with a scrubby mass of low growth beneath the main hedge structure.

The appeal of this image however goes much further, the farm track leads the viewer’s eye through the field towards the hedges running up the rolling hill ahead.

The amazing tree in the foreground, is echoed by trees in the more distant hedges, and the winter light turns this simple scene into something quite dramatic.

Altogether a very satisfying picture. Well done.

Hawthorn hedges in full bloom, with sheep peacefully grazing in a field in front of a country church. A simple yet stunning image, that is beautifully lit, and with a timeless quality that made me want to look again. Well done.

I love this riot of colour in front of what looks like a mixed hedgerow with some blossoming hawthorn. The wide wildflower border to the tilled field must surely be home to a great variety of insects, birds and small mammals.

A very satisfying image. Well done.

Hedges cross-crossing the green landscape, with just hints of colour suggesting spring is on the way. I like the various open gates that are visible, allowing the viewer to imagine how they can walk through this landscape.

Nice capture of a beautiful area.

A patch-work of fields lined by hedges is a beautiful sight. I love the colours in this image, and the subtle variations in the shades from field to field.

When setting up this contest, I searched for an image of hedgerows to use as the header image, and this image with country hedges filling the whole view was the obvious choice. I’m so glad the owner of this image entered the contest, and was placed.

The light in this picture caught my eye. Then all the unruly hedges with leaf-laden trees that mark out the patchwork of fields, in what I like to think is a typical countryside image.

This image really is timeless. I can easily imagine that the view has not changed in centuries. Beautiful. Well done.

This image caught my attention at once, but it took me a little longer to work out why I liked it.

The straight, somewhat unruly hedges, run right across the middle of the scene and it might seem that the viewer’s eye would be stopped by every one.

However, a tractor and baler hurrying across the stubble field , following lines of cut straw, and echoing the lines of the hedges, gives the whole scene motion and life. This coupled with the glinting of the sun off the machinery, and the hazy evening-sun colours, turn this into quite a captivating image.

Well done.

This picture made me smile.

The 3 sheep appear to have escaped from the field behind, where one lone sheep remains. Perhaps the hedges along this country lane have a weak spot somewhere?

The hedges here are typical of hedges all round the country, being a mixture of thorns and undergrowth. I love the little bit of green hawthorn in the foreground, and the blossoming blackthorn behind the sheep, both of which hint at the growth shortly to come.

A really nice capture, with good light, and plenty of interest. Well done.

Photos for this contest should show hedgerows which contribute to the scenic beauty of a rural landscape. Please do not enter photos of garden hedges. The full height of the hedgerow should be captured in at least part of the image. Birds, farm animals, and wildlife, living in or around the hedgerow can be included as part of the bigger picture, but should not dominate the image. I look forward to seeing your entries.

I like the detail of these rural hedges banking the sides of a country road. Hawthorn leaves, and blackthorn blossom lit by a warm light suggest Spring, and the growth soon to follow.

I love how the viewer’s eye is drawn into the scene, and how the hills ahead are also lined with hedges. The contrast between the high hedge on the left, and the more clipped hedge on the right works well, with the woodland in the middle ground to frame the distant fields.

Nice picture. Well done.
