We love the lighting in this shot! It demonstrates masterful control of the spread of light so that it's unclear if the source is natural or artificial – the aim of any professional lighting technician. The composition, colour and sharpness all create wonderful depth. A lovely indoor portrait shot, well done.

We love the lighting in this shot. The highlights and shadows, in combination with choice of black and white gives the image a true film noir feel, which perfectly uses potentially limited space and lighting. An image like this proves you don't need complicated setups to make the most of indoor locations – a single flash will do!

Window light is often said to be the best light for portraits and using the interplay between highlights and shadows is a popular and effective way of approaching indoor portraits. This shot makes great use of shape and form, while allowing up to focus on the subject's face. Nicely done.

We suspect the lighting in this image is deceptively creative – we can't be sure but the light on the subjects' face is likely supplemented with flash or another external light source. The exposure here is perfect, creating the impression of all-natural window light, while using ambient light to good effect.

This is lovely take on the brief – we really like the lighting, exposure and the way the frame is divided half across the diagonal, creating a minimalist feel. The subject positioning and pose all demonstrate great knowledge of environmental portraiture as each aspect says something about the person. Well done!

This a very exotic looking shot! The colours all compliment each other beautifully and the lighting is superb. Although this was likely shot in controlled conditions in a studio, or on a set, the lighting has a gorgeously organic look to it, showing that the photographer knows how to control colour temperature and modification to create a life-like, real world style. Excellently done.

Indoor lighting has a very specific look to it – while it can be hard to manage, it is at least predictable and relatively unchanging. This image is simple but uses window light to great effect, making the most of soft shadows and subtle highlights. Very nicely seen and constructed.

What a painterly shot! Indoor lighting can be tricky to control due to the strong colour variance, however this image puts it to good use, creating a gorgeous palette of warm and cool tones. The costumes, set design and lighting arrangement are all perfect to create a captivatingly timeless shot. Well done.

The best indoor portraits make use of the available environment. This shot uses simple cues to the wider surroundings, introducing interesting detail without overwhelming the subject. The light and colours are beautifully muted and create a thoughtful, engaging portrait shot. Nicely simple and with a narrative twist. Well done.

Generally, placing the subject in the centre of the frame doesn't create the most exciting compositions, however the choice to do so here focussed our attention where it needs to be, despite the busy environment. The subject's gaze is enticing and we see just enough of the background to set the scene and truly imagine that we can smell the coffee!

This is a simple and beautiful shot – the low key natural light is soft and perfectly fits the atmosphere of the scene. The use of a long lens and wide aperture perfectly compresses a potentially busy indoor location and throws the background out of focus, so we can concentrate on the key elements in the frame and that tender interaction between the dog and girl.
