Inspired by... Robert Frank

November 2019

A photograph that captures, in all it's elements - a quintessential Robert Frank image. This photographer must have a copy of "The Americans" on his/her bookshelf. People lost and together at the same time, in a slightly melancholic and stark landscape that renders it a resonance and poetry all of tits own. The couple isolated right in the middle of the frame in an empty cafe that could represent any rather bleak urban landscape we can easily recognise.. Looking at this photograph, you want to know what this couple's thoughts are; who and where they come from. The image suggests more than is shown, which was very much the strength behind Robert Franks work. A poignant image..

In this "inspired by Robert Frank" competition, I was looking for a keen, "outsiders" view of the world, and I think this image really captures that. Although not having the monochrome starkness typical of Robert Frank's work, this image is bleakly poetic and so evocative. Like Robert Frank, the photographer here manages to capture an image that goes a bit deeper; an image that doesn't need any explanation, other than being bleakly poetic, but without sentiment. It seems to capture both that disconnect and interaction of the subjects all in the same moment. The melancholic tilt of the man's hat and all the other subjects; faces not really identifiable, slightly apart from each other underneath the big sky, add to the poignancy of the photograph. I also love the muted Kodachrome-like colours. A very worthy winner that captures the resonance and unrelenting truth of a Robert Frank inspired image.

I love this image. Wry, poetic, poignant - done probably in the same way Robert Frank would have captured this scene. It seems to go a bit deeper, and again, like the best of the great man's work, it does not need any explanation. A photograph that really resonates. I love the way the girls are lost in each other's company, choosing to lie on the floor in a youthful care free way (not bothering to wear shoes), despite the fact that there are all those free seats up for grabs next to them. Isolated in a bleak landscape, In this case an airport concourse; just the tail of a plane to give you an idea of where you are. Definitely an outsiders view of the world. A great, thoughtful image.

A classic image that seems to have come out of the peak period of humanistic social documentary that Robert Frank was part of . Even though you can't see the subject, it still resonates. The strength of the image also comes from the excellent composition using the window frame as the frame of the photograph, capturing a montage of urban elements - people, cars, roads and buildings; using the mist on the glass to introduce mood to the image. A poetic photo done in the original spirit of social documentary. photography coming out of the early-mid 20th century, but still applicable to today for it's timeless quality.

A Wonderfully cinematic image that conveys that stark, resonant poetry of a Robert Frank image; in this case the mood of the photograph is captured in the subject and his thoughtful expression - reflected brilliantly in the window of a train. The subject looks like he has come straight out of that era 60 or so years ago, when Robert Frank was walking the streets of America capturing the melancholy of his subjects. The dramatic late afternoon light falling on his face and the way the photographer has caught him chewing thoughtfully on his thumb, adds to the strength of the picture. A great photograph.

This Photograph has all the makings of a great one; done in the spirit of a Robert frank inspired photograph that captures the disconnect between the subjects in the frame, often isolated in a stark but poetic way. the runner running away from camera to the left; the two people lost in each other and totally oblivious to the central figure that youre eye is inevitably drawn to. However, the central figure needs to be in focus as much as the other figures. Maybe if the photograph was taken from a slightly lower angle on a longer lens. This would improve the overall composition of the image, positioning the subjects better within the frame. A very good image none-the-less.
