Sandi captured the perfect moment when a freeride skier jumped between these perfectly spaced trees. Shot in Zauchnsee, Austria, the landscape is absolutely covered with snow which can throw off exposures, but not Sandi, and he opened the aperture of his lens all the way to f/2.8 for a fast shutter speed of 1/6400mm which has frozen the skier mid-jump. He’s pin-sharp and pops out of the frame -it almost looks 3D and is our clear winner this month.
Gary's shot impressed us as the interesting shadows and curves here show us snow in a way we don't normally get to see, and by using a long 400mm focal length he's been able to pick out a small detail in the landscape, rather than shoot with a wide-angle. Stopping it from getting to the top spot this month was the positioning of the tree, as we think if it was placed off-centre this could have made it even more striking. All-in-all it's a brilliant shot worth of its space in our top ten this month.
We’ve seen hundreds of tilt tree blur images over the years, but Liane’s stands out as one of the best. Not only has she perfected the amount of blur to create an impressionist painterly feel, she’s taken the image while there is fresh snow on the forest floor - creating a fresh twist. I can see this working well in a series of other tilt tree blur images taken in all four seasons. Great job!

This is a cracking shot of the Northern Lights - the colours are fantastic, the exposure looks to be spot-on and the green curtains of the aurora swooshing through the atmosphere definitely grab the eye. However, stopping this image from moving up into our Commended category is the lack of foreground interest or any real focal point - a house, tree, lighthouse or similar would really help balance out the foreground and background.
