Light Painting

December 2021

Crowd
winner

This is one of the more creative light painting effects we've seen this round, and one of the few to incorporate a human subject so large and close in the frame. The light trails accentuate the dancer's movements and add detail that keep you looking from one area to the next.

I have been drawn back to this image on several occasions, trying to unpick how you've created it as there seems to be movement in two directions. The blur works extremely well, helping to draw attention to the subject's face and eyes. Angela

Your choice of location, model and the dress work extremely well with the way you have painted the light. We love how the light resembles folds of fabric, matching those in the dress. Your treatment of the colour is also very good.

We've seen many, many images of Ashness Bridge, but this is a first. The illumination lifts the water nicely and gives an attractive sheen to the wet rocks. The bouncing sparks also replicate the movement of the water, creating a dynamic shot.

Drones are a great way of adding a new element to an image and you've done a very good job here. Kudos for your flying skills as that circle is perfect. The light at the top of the tower also adds a bit of mystery that we like.

We saw a lot of lens ball images in this round, but this one really stood out because of the calming colours and the patterns in the background. The crisp exposure and repeated patterns in the different reflections make this image work very well.

We saw lots of images this round where people used sparklers or steel wool to create light effects, and this is one of the very best. The key to an image like this is the location in which you create your light display, and this old brickwork setting is perfect, as is the exposure.

I love this image. It reminds me of a Scooby Doo episode where the team are chased by a mummy. The blue works very well but what brings it to life is the small areas of red and the green and yellow floor. Angela

It's nice to see an image of a subject painted with light, it's much more about the subject and its exposure rather than the light itself. You've accentuated the subtle details in the scene and created a very attractive result that makes nice use of the shadows.

We bet the couple must have loved this image! Using a light stick rather than steel wool was definitely the right way to go. You've created an arresting image that has a sense of intimacy and neither the couple nor the guests would've foreseen how this would turnout. Great job!

This is an attractive image that stands out from the crowd. We'd love to know more about how you shot it, but the effect looks like sugar being thrown onto the bottle. It's a great choice of bottle as its texture works well in the light.

In essence, this is a very simple image, but we like it a lot. We love the mix of colours and how they illuminate the CD player. It's an unusual choice of subject but it works with the streaks of light.

Your friend must've been delighted with this imaginative portrait. The light painting has come together extremely well. One suggestion however, would be to either clone out the cable to the amp, or hide it if you ever do a reshoot.
