This image captures Alice Cooper’s sneering stage presence. The frontman’s piercing gaze reminds the viewer of his moniker: the godfather of shock rock. A shutter speed of 1/200 sec has been used to freeze the backdrop of sparks and smoke, and the image is made all the more impressive when you consider where it was taken. Right in the middle of a bouncing mosh pit.
This powerful capture of Jenny from the block depicts the artist as she gazes into the crowd. Despite the busy background, she’s been captured alone, leaving nothing to distract the viewer’s eye. Combined with a 200mm focal length, the f/4 aperture has produced ample bokeh, causing the subject to pop against the backdrop. The lighting to the rear of the stage backlights the singer, illuminating the fringes of her hair.
This image is particularly well composed. The curvature of the harp leads the viewer’s eye to the subject and the tilted frame has made for a more striking scene. Gentle colour tones reflect the delicate nature of the instrument and the 1/160 sec shutter speed was enough to freeze the musician’s movements. Finally, light illuminates the subject’s face, which has been captured perfectly sharp.

The Kataklò Athletic Dance Theatre company performs in the Italian city of Padua. A 1/320 sec shutter speed has been used to suspend the dancers in midair, and the flattering stage lighting has added definition to the performer’s toned physiques. Noise reduction was used to compensate for the high ISO, but detail has been retained as the image received only a slight crop.

This image boasts great lighting and the subject’s peaceful expression echoes the delicate nature of the instrument. The standard focal length has enabled the photographer to fit most of the instrument into the frame and the whole scene looks striking in black and white. The only reason this image is unrated is because we ask all participants not to include watermarks.
