This shot stood out immediately I saw it. Keeping the camera as steady as possible is usually the first rule of long exposure photography, but the but in this case the rule book has been turned upside down to great effect. It perfectly strikes the balance between detail and abstraction, adding a unique, dreamlike twist to an instantly recognisable scene.

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** Long-exposure photography faithfully captures the stationary elements of a photograph while obscuring or blurring the moving elements, lending the dynamic features the same sense of energy within a static scene that they have in real life. When it comes to the flow of water, the liquid motion is suggested through a dream-like, softened effect that seems straight out of a painting. This is a technique that's magical to see but can be difficult to achieve.
This is a beautifully crafted image. Not all long exposures need to smooth out the water to a ghostly mist, and I think the photographer has got the exposure length exactly right on this shot, leaving enough detail to see the waves, but enough blur to convey the movement. The pin sharp rock is the perfect juxtaposition to this. A superb image.
Meet the expert judge
This was a tricky image to judge, as its almost very nice indeed. The top half is simply lovely. The mountains receding in the haze behind the stand of trees make for a classic landscape shot. The colours are maybe a little vivid for my tastes, I think the blue could do with toning down a little as it jars slightly with the overall orange hues, but the main reason I couldn't award it a higher position is the slightly awkward foreground rocks which dominate the composition. They feel very much as though they have been chopped off at the bottom, and I think the shot would be much stronger if it was simply cropped above them to focus the attention on the important elements.
