Looking Through

January 2022

This photograph is a great example of street photography and how sometimes, cars can be a good addition to a photo. (I normally go to huge lengths avoiding cars in my work). The blurred blue car cuts through the bottom of the frame, adding a sense of speed and urbanity to the image.

This is an extraordinary photo, with a profound textual commentary. We've all seen many reportage photographs taken during this pandemic but this is one of the most quietly powerful. On a technical level, the composition is perfect, the lines are all straight and the colour is present in restrained detail all adding to the intensity of the image.

I love this interpretation of the competition brief. The complex abstraction of the reflections, perspectives and shadows is wonderful. The photographer quotes Vivian Maier but the image also reminds me of the work of American photographer Lee Friedlander who also made a huge body of work depicting his reflection in mirrors and windows etc. A very strong image.

This photo is almost too perfect, which is a compliment. I love the rain on the window (I have a similar image on the homepage of my website) - and the way it abstracts the strict geometries of the architecture behind it. The panoramic format also works well for this type of image. Also, the flat perspective and aesthetics of the image are reminiscent of the Dusseldorf School.

This is a wonderful photograph documenting oil and water in abstraction. It reminds me of Man Ray or early Constructivist photography. I love the minimal aspects of the image too, a study of reduced colour. A inspiring and original interpretation of the competition brief.

I'm always impressed by photographs that are 'constructed' rather than 'found in the world', if that comparison makes sense? This is a great example of a strong and simple idea manifest in a successful photo. Also, the photographers choice to make the paper image in B&W is correct, just to accentuate the difference between 'reality' and 'copy'. A great photo!

I always love photographs that are eerie and spooky and this one certainly is. Its a photograph of a suburban footpath, nothing to see here, or is there? Photographing at night always has certain technical challenges but this is sharp and crisp, no blurry long exposures luckily. But really the photo is exciting because of its narrative potential, the dots of water on the lens adding to the slightly voyeuristic feeling.

The angle and compositional point of view of this photograph are what I find so appealing about the image. Its strong compositional form anchors the centre of the phtoograph whilst allowing the sky and other figures to be more minimal aspects of the photograph. The choice to shoot in b&w was also a good decision, whereas colour would have caused more distractions. A very confident photograph.

I love the mystery and reportage feel of this photograph. The majority of the photo being in shadow increases the cinematic and narrative potentials of the photo. Who is the woman, what is she doing..? Also, the staged feeling (although I doubt it is?) of the photo adds to its eeriness, fantastic!

This is another fantastic interpretation of the competition brief. Technically, the shallow depth of field and graininess of the photo add to the feeling of speed and energy within the photo. You can almost here the punches and crowd cheering. A wonderful and visceral reportage image.

There were many photographs of Brighton pier within this competition but this was easily the best. The perfect composition of the structure in the foreground successfully anchors the rest of the photograph. Also, the colour palette is just gorgeous and helps to emphasise the stillness of the water. A perfect photograph of this beautiful structure.

This is a brief that makes for a perfect photowalk theme! It might be the photographer looking through something, and using it as an interesting frame for the scene. Or maybe it’s someone or something looking through, and caught in the act.

The photograph is so cinematic, more of a film still than single photograph. I want to know more about the woman in the taxi... the narrative of the image is very strong. The intensity of the colours are also what adds to the cinematic feeling of the photo.

This is a fantastic albeit slightly melancholic photograph. We all can recognise the womans expression, squashed into a crowded bus! The composition of the photograph is also really strong, the balance of steamy window and abstracted faces. The photograph also reminds me of the German photographer Michael Wolf's project documenting commuters on the Tokyo subway.

I love the perfect composition of this photograph. The straight lines and geometries of the photo are just fantastic. I also love the intense yellow colour palette. If it was my photograph I would have probably removed in Photoshop the white sign in the bottom left of the frame, but its inclusion is not really a problem. A fantastic photo!
