This winning photo is a stunner. Encapsulated in a tiny droplet on a single blade of grass is another world of flora which is incredible. This is a masterpiece of lighting and composition and deserves first place in this competition.

Truthfully, whilst flies may not be a firm favourite, this little guy is a cheeky looks like he's ready for his close up. The detail of the eyes is stunning and there is a beauty that is never usually seen. Whilst not winning the top spot, this is an incredibly captivating photograph of one our most common foes.

Here are two genres - macro and still life - that seem tailor made for each other. Both require a degree of attention to detail and allow for more contemplation of the subject matter - its placement, lighting, and composition. Still life is imagery of inanimate objects (both natural and manmade) and these offer the opportunity for the macro photographer to be deliberate and calculated in their approach.
