A lot of what makes a photograph successful is in the balance of a shot and the narrative it creates. Macro is about more than just capturing a subject up close - you still have to think about composition and interest. This is a great subject but the top-down perspective isn't too different to how we see insects everyday, so isn't especially exciting. We also need to make sure the eyes are kept in focus. The shot is nearly there, but we need a better background - try lowering the camera a bit for a side-on, bugs eye view!
Insects were a popular choice of subject for this round and quite unsurprisingly so. Capturing these animals in a creative way can prove tricky though and here the photographer has managed to find a unique view of a well-studied subject. The composition is well considered and really draws you into the scene. Choosing to create the impression of looking up at the insect also introduces a novel and exciting feel to the shot. A great idea that is perfectly executed.

Macro is a popular genre but so often images are captured in a highly formulaic manner. Creators of the most successful images recognize that macro is about far more than simply capturing a subject close up. This image is beautifully composed and makes use of a gorgeous colour palette. The placement of the subject is ideal to be framed by the surrounding flowers while the bokeh forms a great backdrop. The shit proves that even a smaller subject can have a big impact. Well done!
