New Joiners - Animals #626

January 2023

I love how the tentacle acts as a natural frame around that striking eye, drawing you into the image and keeping you engaged. I'd consider applying a subtle vignette to this image to enhance this even further and make the image pop even more.

The colour palette on this image is fantastic with great warm hues that compliment the subject. Capturing her mid call adds to the image further along with the eye shine. The exposure, focus and depth of field are all spot on.

The warm colour palette and light on this image is fantastic and I love how well the bird pops from the surroundings. This image could work well as a square crop, getting the subject to look into the frame and removing the larger chunk of log on the right.

I adore the symmetry in this image and it goes to show that there are occasions when centralising your subject will enhance the image. It works well in black and white and despite part of the subject being cropped off the bottom, it doesn't negatively impact the image.

Aerial images work really well to add a sense of scale and depth to images, as well as allowing us to see the world in a different way. I love how you've captured a splash of colour in these flamingos, making them really pop from the desaturated water.

I really like the contrast between the subject and that vibrant blue backdrop. It works even further with the red. If this is cropped slightly I’d consider moving the bird to the right slightly so he looks into the frame more.

Showing your subject in context of their surroundings is such a powerful tool in wildlife photography as it adds narrative, telling us so much more than a frame filling portrait. I’d consider cropping in ever so slightly from the right but this is a personal preference.

Photographing wildlife from above is something that has taken off with drones becoming more accessible. It gives us a completely new perspective and when it comes to photographing whales, it’s so hard to show their sheer size otherwise. What a great image!

This cat looks battle worn and this is enhanced further by choosing black and white over colour. The contrast is great and the composition is spot on with great context of the surroundings and the cats eyeline drawing you in.

You’ve exposed this image well, with no highlights blown despite the harsh and challenging light. This image is great but if you’re looking for variations, I would attempt a square crop and also see if it works when converted to black and white!

This image works really well with your angle below the meerkat. The composition is great with the subject looking into the frame and no distracting elements in the background to draw you away. I’d see if this can work in black and white.

I like the contrast in this image and how well the cats stand out against their dark surroundings. The symmetry on the two kittens is great and makes the image work with them being centralised. This is another image which could work if converted to black and white.

The eyes are so striking on this image and it really works to draw you in and keep you engaged. I like the warm colour palette, along with the shallow depth of field, perfect focus and great exposure. A worthy winner!
