New Joiners - Animals #760

October 2024

There can often be a temptation to always fill the frame in wildlife photography, but this doesn't always produce the most impactful images. I love how this chipmunk is small in the frame, along with being naturally framed by the surrounding branches.

I love the unique perspective and angle on this image: the side eye really adds to the overall image but also goes to show that you subject doesn't have to be facing or looking into the frame to make a great image.

I love how the dappled light here helps to highlight the main goose, with that gorgeous catch lighting in the eyes really drawing you in along with dramatic shadows. Whilst it's usually not advisable to centralise your subject, you chose well here due the goose in the background.

I love that intimidating stare from this handsome shoebill and whilst the side lighting has created harsh contrast, it only enhances the impact of that eye contact from the subject. The low key background really helps to highlight the detail on the feathers and face.

You've done well here to now blow any highlights on the head of the eagle given the blue sky and bright sun, and yet you've still maintained great detail on the feathers and face. We can see and appreciate the intricate detail on the fish too.

It's really not common to see images of waterfowl from beneath the surface and I love how you also have the fish in the background, adding to the depth and overall interest of the image. The yellow on the eye pops really well against an otherwise cyan colour palette.

I love how expressive this handsome gorilla is and you've captured such fabulous light too which helps increase that separation from the background. I like the centralised composition and the focus is spot on, with every strand of fur popping well in the image.

I love the low angle you've captured here and the variety of subjects in the image. It's clear you did everything you could to increase the depth of field and have the birds in focus too, but sometimes the distance is just too great to achieve this as it was here.

Hummingbirds can be tricky to capture in flight and even when you do, getting the right shutter speed for the wings is your next challenge. You've nailed both here, with subtle motion in the wings whilst we still have sharp detail in the face and water droplets.

I love the expression you've captured here and the contrast of light really adds to the overall image. Whilst there may be a very slight loss of detail in the highlights, it's not enough to be a distraction and the light and colour you've captured in the eyes are divine.

That eye contact is piercing and works so well with the centralised composition due to the symmetry in the face and paws. The shallow depth of field helps to draw you in, although slightly more depth would help to ensure the full eye and muzzle were in focus.

I love the intricate detail you've captured on the feathers and the fae and eye is striking. The composition is good with the subject looking into the frame, drawing you in. Be cautious when processing your images to try and keep colours natural where possible.

I love the separation you've captured in this image from the background and it really helps to enhance the detail on the fur. Those amber red eyes really draw you in and I love that you captured a tender moment so well!

I love the contrast of colour on this image, from the greens and reds in the background to those subtle, iridescent blues and browns on the bird. The catch lighting in the eye is fabulous but to enhance the image further I'd recommend a slight crop from the top left corner to get the bird to look into the frame slightly more.
