New Joiners - Animals #768

December 2024

I really like the centralised composition here due to the symmetry in the face of this handsome subject. The expression and tongue adds to the image along with the slightly lower perspective enhancing the image when it comes to the size of the paws.

The colour palette in this image is really divine and shows how the right time of day and the right light can transform an image. Whilst it's a shame there's a strand of the grass in the foreground slightly obscuring the eye, it doesn't take away from the image and I'm personally glad you didn't clone it out.

I love the warm hues and colours in this image, paired with fantastic fine detail in the feathers due to the direction of the light. The blues are so vibrant but aren't over processed and the composition is good with the subject looking into the frame.

Wow. What an image. The light is brilliant and warm and I love the slight motion blur in the dust to show the pace and movement in the moment. The composition is spot on with the subjects direction drawing you into the image.

Whilst this is a relatively 'simple' image, it works so well and follows the majority of the compositional guidelines that exist. Whilst I really like the blue colour palette, I'd be curious to see this in black and white too to add more contrast and drama.

Meet the expert judge

I love the contrast you've created and enhanced here with the use of black and white rather than colour. It helps to accentuate the eyes, detail and gloss on the feathers and removes any 'distraction that can be caused by colour.

I really like the composition you've captured here, along with the layering of the habitat in the background. I would love to see this image with a more natural colour palette or alternatively in black and white as I feel the green sepia tones slightly distract away from the overall image.

The straight down perspective in this image works so well and I love the contrast between the desaturated water and the colourful snake. There's a slight motion blur on the head of the snake due to the slow shutter speed but it doesn't take away from the overall image.

What fantastic lighting and such an atmospheric shot all round. I like the simplicity of the surroundings and capturing breath like that can be tricky to do as not all stags produce so much, plus the light angle needs to be perfect.

This image has character and I love how cheeky this gorgeous frog looks. You captured brilliant detail in those golden eyes and the shallow depth of field ensures that the background doesn't have any distracting elements to draw your attention away.

I love the warm, green bokeh in this image and it's brilliant that you captured this handsome corvid in the shade as direct sun may well have been too harsh. Having the dappled light in the background adds to the atmosphere and separation in the image.

What a fantastic image. I love the composition and crop you've gone with and there's so much narrative in the image without saying a single word. Whilst this works really well in colour, I think there's potential to add more drama with black and white too.

The light you've captured in this image is brilliant and I love how we can see the spray of water against the dark background. It goes to show you don't need to fill the frame and capture only portraits to get captivating images.
