Whilst there are some technical 'flaws' in this image with focus, it is still such a compelling and dramatic image that it goes to show that the technical elements are sometimes less important. It works even better in black and white and I love the composition.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Animals’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Landscapes’.

The foreground trees and grass acts so well as a frame for the image and I love the subtle colour which is introduced from the flowers. I'd consider cropping slightly from the bottom right corner to remove some of the foreground slightly and add more emphasis to the bear.

I love how the surrounding foliage and the wall acts as a partial natural frame which draws you into the image. This is aided further by the shallow depth of field which ensures the background doesn't introduce any distractions to the image.

I love the charisma and personality beaming through in this image and it works well in black and white which enhances the detail on the fur and eyes. I like how the foreground llama adds depth and perspective, along with a partial natural frame.

I love the shallow depth of field you've achieved here by shooting at a lower angle. The colour palette is good, but could also work in black and white to enhance the detail on the spines and face so worth considering.

I love how much detail you've captured here and the colour is so vivid. It works well with the contrast between the greens of the subject and background against the flower. I'd check your sensor for any dust or specs as there's some showing here.

This image goes to show why it's not always essential to have a face or eyes in the image. This image has so much character and narrative without a single word ever being spoken and I love the colour palette and composition.

I love the shape you've captured with these gorgeous subjects and the colour palette is consistent and warm. I'd strongly consider trying a square aspect ratio on this image as I feel it work work really well given the shape of the subjects.

You've captured such incredibly vibrant colour here which the rain undoubtedly enhances. Along with getting the colour to pop more, it helps to add more atmosphere and depth to the image too and yet, the depth of field is shallow enough to ensure the background doesn't distract.

I love the colour and how well this giraffe pops from the image, paired with that gorgeous golden colour on the mountain behind. If this is a crop I'd consider showing more of the surroundings unless they introduce distractions and to give the giraffe space to move into.

The lighting is divine in this image and goes to show that it doesn't matter what the subject is but more, how you frame, light and capture it. I'd consider slightly cropping from the bottom left as it's a lot brighter than the rest of the image so can draw your attention away.

I love the lighting and colour on this image and the iridescence is lovely. I like the framing and composition and the close crop works well to allow us to appreciate the smaller details on the teeth, face and surrounding anemone.

The shallow depth of field works well here to ensure the background doesn't distract us away from this gorgeous, albeit grumpy cat. I like the colour palette and the detail and sharpness on the face and fur is fabulous, with those whiskers popping so well from the image.

You've captured gorgeous light and colour in this image and whilst there are some blown highlights, they don't detract away from the images overall merits. The detail on the fur is fantastic and I love the eye peeping out from behind it.

You captured such fantastic detail on the skin here, with every crease and crack showing so well. This works really well in colour but would also be a candidate for black and white if you wanted to mix it up and try something different.
