New Joiners - Animals #821

August 2025

This image has great context and a narrative that speaks with no caption needed. Resisting the urge to zoom in and focus in on the horses has worked really well and shows that images with the subject smaller in the frame can be just as impactful.

You've captured a great piece of behaviour here and I love the almost innocent look to him as he eats. Should you come across a scenario like this again, it's worth slowing the shutter speed down slightly in order to drop the ISO a bit, although it's not overly damaged the image quality!

I love the ethereal, soft feel of this image which adds to the overall atmosphere and aesthetic. It's a tricky one to call when we get down to the composition as the ladybird is technically looking into the frame but I'd consider a slight crop from the left to enhance this.

What a marvellous capture, even more impressive given that it's taken on a phone! The colour is vibrant and aesthetically pleasing and whilst the depth of field can be more tricky to control on the fly with a phone, the shorter focal length means that both subjects are in focus.

I love the colour palette you've captured here and the composition is spot on too. Be cautious if using post processing to blur out a background as evidence can show on the edges of subjects, especially when they're soft with fur.

I like the blue hour lighting in this image and how well the reds pop on these gorgeous gulls. Whilst the underexposure adds to the atmosphere of the image, it would still achieve this with a slightly higher exposure too so we can fully appreciate the details in the image.

I love how you've captured two gulls in completely different flight poses here! Should you come across this scenario again, increase your depth of field to try and ensure all subjects are in focus. I'd strongly recommend cropping slightly from the left here to enhance the images impact further!

You've captured a wonderful portrait of this deer and the snow in the image adds to the overall feel and atmosphere, along with adding a bit of depth. It works well with this warm colour palette although given the contrast, I'd consider converting to black and white!

You've captured a wonderfully tender moment here and it goes to show that the subjects in your image don't need to look towards the frame or have any clarity or detail on the eyes to make for a good wildlife image.

This image has so much atmosphere and punch and such a handsome animal too! If this is a crop and the surroundings allow, I'd consider giving a tiny bit more space on the bottom of the image, as well as tweaking the colour balance slightly to remove the green tinge.

What fantastic symmetry you've captured here, paired with such wonderful detail. You clearly increased your depth of field slightly to try and get more detail in the face although I'd have increased it even further, along with increasing your ISO to compensate.

Nighttime photography can be tricky, especially when visibility of your surroundings is limited and you're also using a flash. The composition is brilliant here with nice framing from the foreground and yet it's not blown out from the flash which can be easier said than done!

Crowd and
Expert winner

You captured a brilliant image here, both in terms of technical aspects and aesthetics. I love the warm colour palette and hues in the image and the small droplets of snow or rain add depth and atmosphere to enhance the image further.

Welcome to Photocrowd’s ‘Animals’ contest for New Joiners! These contests are a chance for new members to introduce their photography to the community, and get a taste of how Photocrowd contests work. They can be entered by anyone within their first 28 days of joining Photocrowd. After 100 images have been submitted the contest closes and the Crowd will start rating the images. The Expert Judge will also be judging the images and writing reviews at the same time. All the winners, both Crowd and Expert, will be announced after 3 days of judging. Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Landscapes’.

You've captured brilliant separation on your subject against the background, whilst framing it in such a way that whilst it's out of the focus, the background also helps to frame this gorgeous horse. Portrait orientation was a wise choice and the exposure and focus is spot on.

Grey squirrels are often perceived negatively by the general public, as well as being overlooked by photographers, but these animals have so much personality and various behaviours that they're worth paying attention to. I like how well you've framed the squirrel here against a slightly desaturated background.
