New Joiners - Animals #836

September 2025

The wing shape here is fantastic and what a moment to capture with such a clear view of the successful capture. The light is harsh here which is no fault of the photographer but try to expose for the highlights in these scenarios to avoid blowing them.

Crowd and
Expert winner

What an absolutely electrifying image! I love the action you've captured here with the water and moment frozen perfectly due to a well chosen shutter speed. It works really well in black and white to enhance both the atmosphere and contrast.

The light and colour in this image is really gorgeous and I love the perspective, with the low head giving us an angle on the feet. The shallow depth of field works really well to ensure we remain fixated on the features of the face.

You've captured some gorgeous, warm tones here given the lovely early morning light and I love how it's catching the eye on this diver. The slight movement in the wings is lovely as it adds to the dynamics of the overall image.

The depth of field really enhances this image with that gorgeous, silky bokeh in the background contrasting against the pin sharp details on the dog. The perspective works well with nice layers through the image moving into the background, with nothing to detract or distract away.

The detail on the face here Is really fantastic and I love how an almost fully desaturated image has such a striking golden eye to draw you in. The square aspect ratio works although I'd consider moving the bird ever so slightly to the left.

The foliage in this image works so well to frame this gorgeous Kudu, as well as a leading line from the path. Because the image has some visible grain, which it's clear was unavoidable given the settings, this image could be a good candidate for black and white.

I like the tight crop you've captured here and how the profile on the nose and bridge leads you up nicely to the eye. The depth of field enhances this further. I'd recommend trying this in black and white as I feel it would enhance the contrast and details further.

You've captured a lovely, tender moment here with warm light and good focus on both subjects. I feel this image could work even better if you cropped in or focused more on the heads and faces as the empty space either side doesn't 'add' to the overall image.

What a lovely image showing an otherwise not often photographed subject in some nice, contextual surroundings. The light is warm and aesthetically pleasing with good depth and whilst the larger hyrax is technically looking out of the frame, the majority look in.

The branches on this aesthetically pleasing dead tree works so well to frame the vulture, adding to the atmosphere of the image. I'd recommend ever so slightly cropping in from the right to make the vulture less centralised and maybe also a black and white conversion?

This image is as close to technically perfect as you're going to get. I love the intricate detail you've captured on the face, paired with good separation from the background whilst still giving us some context of the surrounding habitat.

The symmetry you've captured here with the two parents is fantastic and their vibrant colours pop so well against an otherwise green background. To get both parents in focus could be challenging but you've nailed it here, along with the primary chick!

Meet the expert judge

Whilst on paper this breaks a few compositional guidelines due to the horizon being at an angle. I actually like how it's worked here. Those eyes and face really draw you in with the fencing acting like a bit of a frame.

There's so many layers to this image which really helps it to keep the viewers engaged and exploring. Should this scenario occur again, a wider depth of field using your aperture would've benefitted to ensure the birds in the foreground are more in focus too.
