New Joiners - Animals #858

December 2025

The detail and focus on the foreground subject is fabulous, with so much contrast in the fur. Whilst the subject in the background is slightly out, you would've risked introducing a lot more detail from the background to include him.

The light is divine in this image and I love how it's catching the eye. The angle also helps to enhance the detail in the plumage. I'd recommend cropping from the top right corner to get the goose to look into the frame more rathe than being centralised.

You’ve captured a great piece of behaviour here and what’s astonishing as this is captured on a phone! I would recommend a slight crop from the bottom left corner but otherwise this is well composed, exposed and the colour is fantastic.

You’ve captured some lovely details on this handsome tern and I like the soft, warm light. The depth of field is good, ensuring that the background doesn’t introduce any distracting elements and also creating a leading line along the fencing.

The vegetation in this image works so well as a natural frame and it’s unusual in so much that the leopard both stands out but also blends in given the effective camouflage. I would strongly recommend a crop from the right to get the leopard to look into the frame more.

I adore how you’ve used the surrounding foliage to frame this truly striking bird. The shallow depth of field ensures that the detail on the plumage is tack sharp and punches out of the image. I’d consider a small crop from the right to get the bird to look into the frame a bit more.

This is a brilliant image, taken under challenging lighting but you’ve absolutely nailed it! I love the movement in the legs and hooves and yet the vast majority of the image is frozen in time and the reds punch out beautifully!

There’s so much detail in the hair here and I love how the warm colours on the foul pop against and otherwise desaturated background. If this is a crop, I would recommend giving the fall a bit more space on the right hand side.

You’ve used the foreground foliage expertly here to create both depth and a great natural frame. The almost ethereal golden light adds such atmosphere paired with that lovely mist in the air. I would recommend a very slight crop from the left.

This is a wonderful environmental photo showing that you don’t need to fill the frame to capture something compelling. I love the atmosphere from the mist and the leading line created by the fence. I’d recommend a very slight crop from the right.

The colours in this image are so vibrant and punch through the screen! I also love how you’ve captured some water droplets falling from the bill. I would recommend a crop from the top right corner to get this gorgeous subject to look into the frame more.

This is a great example of how a relatively simple image can still be impactful. I like your choice to go black and white rather than in colour to isolate the pigeon better against the background. The bokeh is lovely with great separation and a nice partial frame from the fence.

I like how you’ve captured some movement in the back wing whilst the face and front wing are perfectly sharp. When you do selective exposure adjustments, weather with masks or manually brushing in, be cautious around fine edges as it can lead to artefacts.

The yellow in this image really enhances it compared to if it was just greenery. There’s good separation and depth, although I’d recommend a slight crop from the right as the body subtly points to the left of the frame.

Another image in the top 10 taken on an iPhone… it goes to show how capable they can be at capturing compelling images. There’s a great narrative that needs no caption in this image and the wonderful wintry feel framed by the window.
