New Joiners - Animals #867

January 2026

What a really fantastic abstract image of an otherwise easily recognisable subject. I love what you've done here and the flakey, tactile textures on the image makes it feel like it's popping out of the screen. This could also be a candidate for black and white.

What an awesome, action packed capture and I love how well the waves frame the sea lions: it's so easy for a stray globule of water to cover the face and distract away. The exposure and colour is spot on with great depth.

What a frosty, cold atmosphere you've captured here with the heron looking like he's bracing from the cold. To make this image even better, I'd recommend a crop from the left to get the subject to look into the frame more and an increase to the exposure.

I love these kinds of images where the subject blends in impressively well, showing just how effective camouflage can be. It's only the facial expression and small flashes of white on the ears and muzzle that gives him away. I'd recommend a slight crop from the lower left corner.

Swallowtails are such beautiful subjects and you've captured this one so well, with that crisp detail on both the wings and the flowers drawing you in. Be cautious when adjusting depth of field in post processing as this can leave artefacts behind.

This image has both atmosphere and depth and you've done a fantastic job to hold the focus through such dense snow, which can play havoc with AF systems. I'd recommend a slight crop from the right just to centralise him a bit more.

This image and subject is brimming with personality and charisma, simply down to the goofy expression on this leopard cub. You've done well to shoot through the foreground foliage and branches to get a lovely, clear image with nice framing.

What a beautiful bird and I love how those subtle colours of green and brown both blend in and pop out of the image. The reflection captured on the eye is divine and the branches frame him well, although I'd recommend a slight crop from the bottom right corner.

The low angle, paired with the wide field of view makes this image so impactful, and it's even more impressive given that it's captured on a phone: it just goes to show their capabilities when utilised well! I love the image in colour but it could also be a candidate for black and white.

What a beautiful fox and you've captured so much detail and texture in the fur to enhance the shallow depth of field. The warm colours are gorgeous and the eyes are so lifelike. I'd recommend a slight crop from the right.

What a fantastic image where if you followed the 'rules', the flamingo would be placed to the right, but you've shown here that rules are made to be broken! I love how well the pinks pop from the image and such a great reflection.

This image has so much for viewers to explore and study, without being distracting from the overall photograph: this is a hard thing to achieve effectively but you've done it well here. The shallow depth of field ensures the subject pops and yet we still have some context of the surroundings.

This is such a lovely portrait of a young Highland cow and I love the warm hues and consistent colour palette throughout. It works well in portrait rather than landscape orientation and you've cropped the body at the most optimal point.

What an awesome capture of some lovely behaviour! It work well in portrait given the tall pose from the snake and I love how well the light is catching the eye. I'd consider a mild crop from the bottom right corner.

This handsome macaque blends in so well with the image given the consistent colour palette throughout. Be cautious when processing your images as it's easy for artefacts to show, especially with depth of field adjustments and masking around soft edges.
