New Joiners - Landscapes #503

February 2021

Long exposures with fast-flowing water are tricky to get right, too short and it just looks static but too long and it just becomes a blurry mess. You've got it pretty much spot on here, the water still has texture but you definitely get a strong sense of motion and the power of the river is clear.

Having been to Norway in the Autumn I know how beautiful it can be, you've done a nice job of capturing the reflections and that big sky. I wonder if it would have been possible to step to the right just a tad to get past the foliage on the left? All in all, a really pretty photo!

I like the reflections in this photo, It's a place I've visited a few times myself but never managed to see it still enough for reflections. I'd maybe reconsider the framing a little if you get to shoot a scene like this again, giving the trees some room to breathe at the top of the image would really elevate this shot!

I really really like this photo, it's got loads to look at and keep your interest all the way through. The patterns in the sand are really striking and the lack of footprints is always nice to see at popular locations like this. The mountains are framed well and the sky looks nice and moody. The low sun has cast lovely light over the scene too, topping off a really good image! A worthy winner!

I like the contrast between the fiery sky and the cold dark foreground, it almost looks apocalyptic! It's quite often the case that skies like this happen when you don't expect them to! I can't recall ever seeing a photo from the Teide National Park with snow so it's nice to see something a little different!

I like the abstract nature of this photo, you've done well to find a shot with no people as quite often locations like this are very busy! It reminds me of the gorges in Slovenia, the vivid green moss and tall slim waterfalls and it looks great!

Holy Island is one of my local haunts and somewhere I've photographed a lot, you've done a nice job here. I like the mono treatment, and its framed well. If I was to be super critical I'd maybe have spot healed the dark patch of cloud top left as it does distract the eye a little but it's still a really nice image!

This is a really pretty scene. Mist, sunlight and trees go together so well and couple that with some reflections and it's a recipe for success. Even if you didn't find the birds you were originally looking for you still came away with a great image! A cracking first post!

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.

I like that this is taken in a residential area yet it still conveys a feeling of being in a winter wonderland like Sweden or Norway. It's a shame there are so many footprints however that's not your fault and can't be helped! The natural tunnel created by the overhanging trees looks great with a covering of snow.

I like this, the ONLY reason it didn't make the top 10 is that the sky is just that little bit too bright. The photo gives a good sense of isolation, and the lone figure adds a sense of mystery!

The atmosphere in this photo is fantastic, and I admire your perseverance to go out and get it. It can be frustrating waiting for the right conditions but it's definitely paid off here. The negative space works well, and it's a nice clean composition. I'd be well chuffed to have taken this.

Tree shots are difficult and often cluttered, it's not easy to find a composition without distractions but you've done a pretty good job here. There's always going to be a chaos of sorts to woodland shots but the muted treatment and vignette have made the chaos seem somewhat more organised. A nice shot and well worth a spot in the top 10.

The colours in this are great, It's the kind of light you always hope to have when you go out with a camera! I'd maybe have used a graduated ND filter on the sky which would have given a more overall balance to the exposure but it's still a really nice image to look at!!

This is a pretty cool photo, it really shows the power of nature, the lightning makes it looks like the sky is on fire! I admire your dedication to get up at 2 am wait around to capture this, it's really paid off!

I like a good inversion, it's always a treat seeing them and even better when you have your camera to hand! If I was to be super critical I'd maybe have liked to see this as a 16:9 crop losing a little of the sky and immediate foreground but it's still a really pleasing photo!
