New Joiners - Landscapes #519

April 2021

I'm not sure whether your lens flare was intentional or not, but I like it. It shouldn't work but in this case, it does. nice composition and a bold choice shooting straight into the sun but it looks great. Nicely done.

This is fantastic, so simple yet effective. Compositionally it's wonderful, it's got a symmetry about it despite the trees being totally different. Also, I like that it's shot on a cloudy day, it has an ethereal feel to it and the long exposure on the water works a treat. Really well done!

Meet the expert judge

Try to consider your composition, I can see what you were aiming for here however the foreground branch does distract from the overall image. I think had you maybe got a foot to the right and a foot lower so the bridge was framed by the tree it would have been a much stronger image!

I like this and think it's got a lot of potential to be a great minimalist shot, there's a couple of things I'd address however! You need to make sure your horizon is level, it slopes to the left so makes the image look a little unbalanced. I'd maybe crop a little of the top and bottom too as the shadow in the foreground is a little distracting, Nicely exposed though and it looks a lovely place to chill out!

This has a great mood to it and loads of atmosphere. Generally speaking, a central composition shouldn't work but you've got enough interest all around to carry it off. Good call on cloning out the people on the beach too, adds to the sense of isolation!

I think this has a lot of potential, however you've missed a trick by shooting it portrait. All of the interest is in the middle so I'd have cropped this to a 16:9 and done away with the top and bottom. It's a lovely subject, the lone figure silhouetted against the sky watching the sunrise/sunset!

I like your back story, it's good you put a lot of effort in! I like this as it's unusual, cool colours on the tree and not something you see a lot. I'd maybe have underexposed it a little and then raised the shadows in post-processing as the sky is a bit blow out but it still looks nice.

What an awesome sky, the colours are fantastic. It looks like the apocalypse is coming! I'd have loved to see a tighter crop on the mountains and that red sky, maybe shot with a longer focal length. Keep an eye on your horizon as well, water needs to be level! Overall a nice shot :)

That's an awesome viewpoint, I bet you're glad your friend told you about it! I like the image as a whole, however I do think the small twig in the bottom left is a little distracting. Try to be aware of things that will take the attention away from your main subject!

I like the colours in this, it's nice and bright and has a feel-good ambience. I think you could have maybe cropped some of the bottom off to lose a bit of the grass, it would balance the image a bit more :)

I like this, i's a really nice composition. It looks like you've either knocked your tripod or if you've used a lens with VR/VC/IS it looks like you've left it on as it's not as sharp as it could be. Good water movement though, and nice colours.

I love reflections, so this grabbed my attention straight away. It looks great and the exposure is spot on, I'd maybe have cloned the twigs out the bottom left as they do draw the eye a little but overall it's a lovely photo.

This looks fantastic, you've done a great job of bringing out the detail in the milky way. I'd be tempted to rotate it a bit to the left to straighten the horizon. It looks like it's leaning to the right. Keep it up, looks like you're off to a good start with astrophotography!

I really love woodland photos, and using a wide aperture is a great technique in giving the image a sense of depth. If this was mine I'd have cropped it to 16:9 losing some from the top and bottom, that's just my preference though it still looks fantastic!

I really like this, it's got a real feel-good factor. the 16-35 is great for sun stars stopped down, I do this fairly often as I love the effect it gives. I'd maybe have lightened the shadows a tad but that's personal preference, still a nice image :)
