I love the atmosphere in this image. It has a moody mystery that pulls me in and makes me want to look closer. You intimate in the description that you wish you could say it was a long hike, but I'm a firm believer that it's not about how accessible a vista is, it's what you do with that scene that counts. Because you've passed this scene many times, I imagine you already knew how you wanted to frame everything, so once the right conditions arrived, you were ready. The soft light and hint of colour in the sky is just lovely, and the almost mirror like reflection tops off the composition. Nicely done!
This is a well composed long exposure that deals with the dense foliage well. The movement in the water adds some interest to the foreground and that log in the bottom left is well framed, reaching out towards the edge of the image but not penetrating it. The light in the mid and background is soft and lovely, highlighting enough of the trees to elevate the entire composition. This is a technically sound, interesting image, well done.

Make sure you also check out our two other New Joiners contests - ‘People’ and ‘Animals’.
This is a pleasing image that has a lovely tonality throughout. The long exposure of the waterfall cascading down the rocks adds to the narrative and creates interest by providing a sense of movement. I like how you've framed it with some of the sky included as the uniform colour helps to balance out the tones in the rest of the image. The only thing that really ruins it for me if the size of the watermark which is awfully distracting.

This image is full of glorious, bold colour. That yellow oilseed is complimented by the warm colours of sunrise just before the sun appears above the horizon. There is some lovely undulation in the cloudscape, adding interest to the sky. I love it when you just happen across moments like this, like you did on your morning run. It demonstrates the power of the iPhone camera. I'd be inclined towards a panoramic crop to lose some of the space in the foreground created by the thinning out of the crops. Lovely, evocative image worthy of the top ten.
This is a lovely, classic misty landscape. The promise of these kind of conditions always gets me out of bed at ridiculous o'clock on summer mornings, purely because there is something just magical about morning mist and sunrise. Throw in a tree or two and you've got something special. The mist is helping to separate out the foreground from the back, and the silhouette of the tree works well. I really like the hint of the rising sun too. Lovely, effective image.
You've captured a rather dramatic scene here which pulls in the eye. I like that you've made the decision to compose low to the rocks in the foreground which gives them much more prevalence in the composition. The warm tones of the rocks compliment the moody, grey sky that dominates the rest of the image, helped by a hint of light falling on the trees on the shoreline. The sky itself has some blown highlights which is a shame, but it's difficult to control an exposure when the weather is changing rapidly.
This lovely, quiet image stood out to me when I was scrolling through the entries. It's probably one of those images that wouldn't do hugely well in the crowd vote, but it has so much on offer. The light dappled trees are really lovely, with a hint of the river behind reflecting the sky. The portrait framing works well to focus attention on the trees and the monochrome processing helps to bring out that contrasts. It's an image that gets better the more you look at it, and proof that the best camera is the one you have on you. Thanks for sharing.
The contrast of colours in this summery shot work well. The greens and occasional hints of warmer colours in the foliage work well with the bright blue sky. The composition at the bottom of the image is really nice with the sweep of the river back leading the eye into the image, and the mountains in the distance reflecting into the water. However, I think the overall composition could have been improved by cropping out some of the sky, reducing the negative space. Some of the clouds are also slightly blown out which is a shame. Still, there's plenty about this image that works.
Some images just have a way of transporting you directly into the scene itself, and this is one of those images. I can imagine myself looking at the colour changing in the sky, the low cloud clinging to the hilltop and the breeze disturbing the reflection as it moves over the surface of the lake. The atmosphere in the image is evident, but it's let down a little by a slightly wonky horizon and an uneven exposure with those hills shrouded in darkness. A crop on the right would also help to focus attention on the main interest in the photo. Still, there's enough here that works well.
I enjoy a good skyline, especially when the light has faded and the city starts to come alive. The colours in the sky that you've captured are really nice, holding back the night with their warm tones and complimenting the lights illuminating windows throughout the composition. The silhouette of the city is a little too dark for my liking. I would have liked to have seen some more details in those buildings, but that aside you've creating an atmospheric cityscape.
It always makes me smile that there are actually less than 12 Apostles now but no one is willing to change the name. It's an incredible, imposing scene and you've manage to convey that in your image. The filtering light of the sun bursting through that cloud is really dramatic and must have been breathtaking to witness. Whenever you're shooting into the sun there's always a danger of lens flare, which you have incurred here. The colours are also a little over-saturated and could benefit from a reduction in the oranges and reds just to help even out the image. Powerful seascape.
It's been a decade sine I last saw the peak of Mount Cook, and your image brought back some happy memories. Nostalgia aside, there is plenty about this shot that works well. The mysticism of the mountain is increased by the mood that you've captured. The snow adds to the texture of those dark peaks, accentuated by the cloud shrouding the rest of the mountain and obscuring the sky. The telephoto composition removes any distraction although I would have gone for a tighter crop at the top of the frame as there's a lot of negative space that's not adding too much to the composition.
Interesting seascape that demonstrates that sometimes a shorter long exposure can be just as impactful as one that is minutes long. Using a shutter speed of this length allows you to capture some of the that movement in the water as it spills over the rocks and crashes on the shore and this can really impactful. I like the colours in this image, from the warm rocks in the foreground, to the blues of the sea and the grey/lilac hue of the moody sky. The panorama as works well. Nice work.
There's so much going on in this image that it spent a good couple of minutes getting lost in the all the details. If you hadn't added the hashtag I wouldn't be sure it was in the Lake District, demonstrating how different weather can completely change a familiar landscape. I love the layers disappearing backwards through the fells to the low cloud beyond. The frozen tarn adds some interest, as does the small silhouettes of the two figures on the ridge, making their way upwards. This is a compelling image that's well captured and processed.
This image has a really nice feel to it, you've captured some nice warm tones which add the to atmosphere of the composition. I really enjoy how the light is playing with the grass in the foreground and how you've framed it so there is a fine slither of beach visible, leading out the the sea. The warm tones in the foreground work, but they've made the sky a little alien, which is possibly a look you were trying to achieve. Overall, an interesting image enhanced by the backstory you've provided.
